Mrs Mallard is devastated as she sits in her room, meditating across the window. While in the room, she feels a sense of embodiment and peace from the oppression of her husband. She recalls all the deeds she experienced while with her husband, and now that he is dead, she can feel the light of independence across the window. Mrs Mallard whispers in her breath, “free, free, free!” Depicting the essence of freedom and independence in this context. At this time, she becomes calm and relaxed while warm blood flows in every inch of her body.

Being a married woman, she also experiences emotional and mental liberation in her room as she yearns to be free. Upon stepping out of her room, she tastes the light of freedom. However, it is quickly taken away from her. She is overjoyed by the situation and dies of heart disease. In this regard, Kate Chopin perceives what women undergo and the urge to be free and independent from their husbands. Women today acknowledge the significance of some natural causes in their lives and they believe that freedom and independence will answer most social conventions and traditional gender roles in our societies.

Statistics has it that women are the majority in our world today, but they are the most oppressed individuals. Gender biasness has been the root of oppression against women. Most people across the continent believe that women are incomparable to men in terms of work, marriage, and other social conventions. In this prospect, oppressiveness in marriages is not an exception in this discussion as Kate Chopin believes that it is a native culture in our communities to be in oppressive marriages. She describes the article as oppressive despite most marriages being happy and kind. In her book, Kate Chopin claims that Mrs Mallard’s husband is loving and kind, yet upon his death, she rejoices. It is not a malicious activity towards Louis, but she still believes that she would cry at his funeral because she loves him. According to Kate Chopin, “And yet she had loved him—sometimes. Therefore, self-identity and discovery stem out when, at first, she is frightened by her awakening as she overcomes grief and embraces her new self. Aspects such as self-identity and development have influenced the modern world especially women. Women today identify and develop themselves through family, marriage, and work. For instance, some women feel that a strong and empowered woman can achieve their desired success through the family.

In conclusion, Kate Chopin gives a broader perspective on oppression, freedom, independence, self-identity and development at large. She described Mrs Mallard as one of the women yearning for freedom, independence, and self-identity. Most women today try to identify themselves with the society, but gender inequality and biasness kick in to deny women opportunities just like men; hence, you see Mrs Mallard rejoicing upon his husband’s death.
