Mixed reality
Mixed reality has always been a confusing topic for most people. Mixed reality blends the digital world with the physical world. It is the most significant evolution in the environment, computer, and human interaction, which has unlocked possibilities that have been restricted to human imaginations. It includes location, spatial sound, and environmental input.
Satya Nadella, the chief executive of Microsoft, has just offered the audience of Sydney a peek of the upcoming future: Qantas. He refers to Qantas as the ultimate version of mixed reality. Mr. Nadella, at the Chanticleer’s lunch of The Australian Financial Review, said, “If you can mix what is virtual and what is real, then that is the ultimate experience. You don’t have to reach into your pocket for a device or anything; it is just there.”
Are you wondering how mixed reality is bringing profits? The Qantas uses the HoloLens technology of Microsoft to ensure that the engineers of an airline have a detailed insight of the flight deck in times of maintenance purposes. This helps in saving several hours spent behind training the engineers on flight simulators. The mixed reality HoloLens 2 headset provides visual cues to the engineer with the help of a software called Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Toolkit. This helps in saving millions of dollars, which was otherwise spent on training. The HoloLens 2 is a fully customized model with modular design, unique settings, eye tracking, improved spatial mapping, fully articulated hand-tracking with twenty-five individual sensors, and a wide field of view.
Nadella further commented that “By mixing the two media, you’re able to have now a simulator that allows you to train yourself while you’re at the job.” However, mixed reality is not replacing the present physical practices taken by an instructor for EGRS, as stated by Qantas’ group learning technology manager, Amanda El Bahou.
By using artificial intelligence, the businesses these days are increasing their “tech intensity” to make most out their resources, time, data, and efforts. Due to less advanced technology in most organizations, about seventy-three percent of data remains un-analyzed. This results in a massive loss of opportunity. With the help of mixed reality, Microsoft is trying to turn mere organizations into proactive ones where they would be able to receive data as well as change the outcomes, products, undertake and build efficient operations. Altoura and Qantas are exploring the area more, which includes the simulator responding to a fire in the engine.
In case you think that such advanced technology would bring great danger if fallen into the wrong hands, then you are correct. Some employees of Microsoft have sent an open letter where they have highly criticized Microsoft for signing a contract worth $479m with the Army of the US. This would no doubt increase lethality in the technology of warfare.
