A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
The novel, “A Farewell to Arms” was authored and published in 1929 by Ernest Hemingway, who based it on the World War I campaign by the Italians. In the novel, it is apparent to note that the notion of Frederic Henry towards war drastically changes within the book. It is right to develop from the story that Henry is exposed to life challenges during the war that eventually diverts his thoughts concerning it. The attitude towards war diminishing is connected with the capacity of Frederic to discover that war is a waste of time and perceives it in a diverse manner (Hewson 57). The retreat also indicates on the lose of morale that pushes Henry to change perceptions about the war. Consequently, in Heming way’s “A Farewell to Arms”: it is reasonable to maintain that the numerous injuries experienced by Henry, backdropping of his group, and war frustrations are crucial towards Henry’s change of perception on the war which can be compared to a personal experience in rivalries between basketball teams in high school.
Henry discovers that war affects him through the wound he develops after his knee is hit by a mortar. He is disappointed by the constant injuries and further postings to the frontline upon recovery. Moreover, the frustrations during the war connected to the continuous retreats affect his morale significantly. It contributes to the defeat of the Austro-Hungarians conquest (Hemingway 87). The change in perception is connected to the groups backdropping in the war as they discover that war is a waste of time. On personal experience, the constant rivalries between my basketball team with the rest of the competitors were ended through the loss of morale to fight any longer. It became apparent that the fights were not earning us anything.
In conclusion, it is probable to depict that Henry’s morale backdrops as a result of constant frustrations, retreats, and wounds he develops during the war. The connection with life experience builds on the fact that war is a waste of time.
