reflection of where I’m correct on my leadership capabilities and the vision I have for the next five years
As Theodore Hesburgh (President of the University of Notre Dame) said, “the very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. It’s got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forceful”. This paper is a reflection of where I’m correct on my leadership capabilities and the vision I have for the next five years. It also includes the plan, goals, and the time frame I have in attaining my professional objectives.
I agree with jack welch that a leader is the one who seeks to grow others so that they can become better in their lives. The leader I want to be in five years to come is that leader who will always seek to see his colleague raise into great heights in whatever they do. The success of my leadership will be measured by the success I have helped others to make in their lives. For the success of a true leader is not measured in how much he accomplishes but in how much he has helped his colleagues to accomplish.
In achieving this vision, I release that I need to improve my competence of self-leadership and to lead others as well as taking leadership as a vocation. I realized that I am an average communicator, and this level of this skill is not sufficient for an effective leader. To improve my communication, I need to work on my emotional and social intelligence to achieve effective communication. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
In leading others to become better, I released that I need to make my nature of accommodating diversities of character among my colleagues stronger and unshakable. This is because if I have to make others become and do better, I need to treat everyone uniquely. Everyone is different, with a unique personality, and treating everyone, in the same way, will be a disadvantage to others.
Most importantly is that I need to continue taking leadership as a vocation, and continue to treat my colleagues with compassion, kindness, and justice. Leading with an ethical obligation for the good of others will be the best way to inspire others. In this way, you make them feel you care about them and make it easy for them to follow you.
In achieving this vision, I have developed a personal leadership vision statement that reads “to consistently communicate with clarity and honesty. Lead with humility, fairness, and integrity to create an enjoyable professional working environment as well as mentoring others to become better and more effective in their lives.
Leadership objectives
Communication: being an effective communicator is key to becoming an effective leader. What many people do not realize is that effective communication is two way, and it involves both verbal and non-verbal communication. To achieve my, I need to allow dialogue in my conversation and be able to lead messages that are communicated non-verbally through emotions and other body expressions.
Innovation: one cannot become a good leader if he or she is doing things in the same way they have been done in the past. In the next five years, I will try to improve my innovation skills and try to come up with new strategies on how to do things. This will help me coup with the ever-changing world.
Create workable strategies: sometimes, when one is creating strategies, he might be tempted to create something ideal that won’t be very easy to implement in a real-life situation. Therefore, I will seek to improve my skills of strategizing to ensure that the strategies I come up with are as real as possible for easy implementation.
Motivation: in leading others, one cannot be useful if you do not care to motion your colleagues. A leader is a person who inspires and supports others to achieve the common good of the team. Thus, this that I need to cultivate, to be able to inspire my team. I need to practice give criticism in a positive way rather than in a way that demoralizes someone.
Transformation: being ready to transform is a quality that a leader cannot do without. Cultivating this quality it will help me not to shy away from discarding the processes that are currently in place and adopt new ones. This quality will work well with innovation skills.
Accept criticism and correction: in realizing this vision in need not to be a know it all person. It is vital for me to my colleagues and evaluates their point of view. Accepting other people’s opinions will help me improve my understanding and expand my perception of different issues.
To be kind and compassion: as a leader do not only need to be professional but also to be in touch with the emotions and the challenges any of my team member is going through. In this way, my team will know I do not only care about team performance but also the happiness and wellbeing in their lives. This way it will be easier for me to influence them.
Activities that will help me achieve my objectives
To achieve the above-stated goals, I need to carry out some activities. These activities include:
Participating in an internal workshop on personality. This will help me understand my personality and enable appreciate other people’s personalities.
Taking short courses on strategizing. This is a continuous one-month course that I will take every year for the next three years. I will help me improve my skills of creating and implementing strategies.
Reading leadership books. Books written by great authors like Zigziglar and Maxwell will be beneficial. I will ensure I read such a book every three months. These books will help me learn and develop more leadership skills.
Attend leadership conferences and seminars. This will provide an excellent platform to interact with other leaders and learn from them how I can become a great leader.
How to assess my professional development plan
Since leadership is a call to serve others, it is only those you serve can correctly evaluate your progress in becoming a good leader. In this I will develop an evaluation sheet, that I will be giving to my team after every six months to evaluate whether I am becoming a better leader or not. This way, I will be able to know the areas I need to improve and those I need to uphold.
Becoming a leader is a continuous process. In fact, some experts in leadership training say that it takes a lifetime for one to become that leader he or she has always dreamt of. But following the above-stated vision and achieving these objectives in the near future, my team and I will be proud of the leader I have created in me.
