Analysis of passage
- What is going on in the passage in regard to the plot, characters, setting and or themes of the novel?
The passage is a description of the personality and physical attributes of a character Doc. The description of the physical qualities allows the readers to visualize the character. The description of nature brings out contradicting characteristics of an individual. It is a realistic representation of the reality of humanity.
2. Explain the significance of at least three different literary devices.
– Imagery- Imagery is depicted in the description “He wears a beard, and his face is half Christ and half satyr, and his face tells the truth.” Half Christ and half satyr are to describe his contradicting physical appearance. Christ-like characteristics suggest a form of immaculate presentation, while a satyr is representative of unattractive physical features.
– Irony- Irony is depicted in Doc’s nature of saving women from trouble, only to get them in another form of discomfort. As a person interested in protecting people, his primary intention should be to get the women out of trouble and keep them safe.
– Diction- He will wade in a tide pool up to the chest without feeling the damp-the choice of words in this case use hyperbole to show the reader the extent to which Doc dislikes water on his head.
3. Explain why you liked this passage, and why you thought it was necessary.
I liked the part where the author describes the stature of Doc and then juxtaposed it against his personality of being fierce. Under normal circumstances, small people are often looked down upon due to their size. However, the author allows Doc to stand up for himself once he is overwhelmed with passionate anger. The choice of words “passionate anger” suggests that Doc is slow to anger. However, he has lines that once crossed; he becomes fierce.
