Affirmative Action
Admission to American universities has not been easy for students and particularly for students of color. Many students, especially those that are not white, have lacked admission to institutes of higher learning based on the color of their skin. This has led to less than a third of the whole black population in the United States to complete higher education (The History of Affirmative Action, 2019). With many people among the black community lacking access to proper education, they end up in less paying jobs, and most of them go into casual labor. There is a large number of black people who are unemployed, suffer high levels of poverty, and those who are employed are often paid low income (Marger, 2014). The affirmative action programs were implemented during the presidency of President Barack Obama, but President Donald Trump seeks to redirect these laws toward investigating and suing universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants (The History of Affirmative Action, 2019). In light of President Trump’s redirection, affirmative action programs should not stop especially in higher education institutions and workplaces.
One of the main reasons why affirmative action measures were put in place is to improve the lives of African-Americans and other minority groups living in the United States. As the affirmative policies kept evolving, they stipulated that anyone in business with the federal government, were required to take steps to increase minority representation (Marger, 2014). Despite bringing equality, there are disagreements beaming concerning the programs. The measures are seen as ‘reverse racism’ and they may be in violation of the American Creed (Marger, 2014). All the disagreements being brought forth could not water down the importance of affirmative action programs. Minority groups have access to equal opportunities in academics and work places as their white counterparts because of these laws.
