“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” –Hippocrates
Over the past several years, I have realized that food revolves around my life, health, soul and happiness, and this fascinates me and motivates me to become a growing passion for food. From the formative years of college to this hour and this day, there is not a single moment where I am away from eating and living with the utmost vigilance. When food ultimately embodied every aspect of my life, I quickly turned to explore more knowledge of traditional and contemporary human diets. While learning about the current food trends and its impact, I discovered that the potential demise of humanity and nature through the poor dietary habit was something I could not accept. My purpose of helping the individual to be healthy through nutrition from depleting health can further be optimized through a career in dietetics.
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” –Hippocrates. This quote summarizes my further motivation to enter the field of dietetics. According to World Health Organization that at least 80 per cent of all Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke up to 40 per cent of cancer could be prevented if population ate better, engaged in more physical activity and quit using tobacco. Simple changes in diet can make a significant impact on a person’s well-being, and this is what I have realized in my four years of experience that the patients got their desired health goal through my little dietary modification and guidance. Born into a family that is a foodie but misunderstood its value in life, I entered my adult life battling familial hyperglycemia. As a result of my own experiences, food has been both my saviour and my enemy, leading me to seek further knowledge where I can help others understand and utilize food as medicine with exercise for the prevention and management of the disease. My life goal is to use the knowledge and skills I have gained from my education and life experiences to empower others to live healthier lives through proper nutrition.
The quote by the Great Mahatma Gandhi “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” evokes me to serve for the patient and the feeling of satisfaction. And more that can’t be described in words I realized during my RD registered dietitian internship in Tata hospital where I learned about oncology nutrition and practised it with my best of knowledge for the patients’ benefits. The 700-bedded hospital not only increased my knowledge in clinical nutrition but also inculcated humanity, feeling to serve without any returns. When I empathized with oncology patients and their family struggling with disease, financial problems, fear of losing their near ones, I had tears in my eyes most of the time during internship. There were times I felt self-satisfied when I could help them to reduce the side effects of treatment through diet modification and felt grateful to the almighty guiding me and giving me the exceptional opportunity to serve them.
After my internship, I worked in hospitals, government diabetes clinic and NGO to expertise my knowledge in clinical nutrition field by advising clinical diet with exercise to the patients depending on their individual health status. Currently, I am a clinical nutritionist consultant in Oncare foundation, which gives support for the oncology patient.
Apart from counselling, I have presented my Masters in Sports Nutrition Research paper in a Global Congress on Physiotherapy, Physical Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, Dubai in front of worldwide physiotherapist as well as published my research “Impact of Dietary Protein intake, Lean Body Mass percentage, Body Mass Index, Physical activity on Urinary Creatine and Urinary Creatinine excretion in a TeamSport” in Medical & Clinical Research Journal and in ACTA Scientific Nutritional Health Journal.
My further goal is to do lifestyle nutritional research from two different countries and study in broader terms the effect of genetics, environment and behavior on the health and diseases of the people and get insights into the methodical and integrated approaches to assess, intervene and custom-made changes in the context of lifestyles, individual needs and cultural differences.
I also got an invitation to be part of Scientific Research and Community as an Executive Editor, and along with this, I am also a founder of nutritional e-clinic ‘B’onne Sante Nutrition Clinic’. The goal of my clinic is to give nutritional support not only through counselling but also with the delivery of food to the patients at their specific place.
