Though it has been a long semester taking part in English 301 class, I have learned multiple things that I have gained that I believe will make me a better student going forward. The course entailed several learning activities that help students to become proficient writers and readers. Indeed, looking back on this class, I have recognized how far I have improved on my writing prowess, by moving from being a less-confident writer to someone who can swiftly incorporate different writing skills to draft a top-notch piece of work. I believe that by having a comprehensive reflection on these activities, I can be able to identify the areas that have significantly improved and those that I feel I should seek to enhance in my spare time such that I can become a more accomplished author. While all of the activities that were covered in the English 301 class, how to construct a thesis statement, strategies of a research paper, inclusion of signal phrases in essays, how to use rhetorical strategies, and how to undertake a rhetorical analysis were the most interesting.
The need to incorporate a strong thesis statement when drafting an essay is one of the most exciting activities that I enjoyed in the English 301 class. Initially, I knew little of the significance of this element in a write-up; hence, I paid little attention to it when completing various essay assignments. Through my participation in this class, I have since learned that a strong thesis statement does not only summarize the main point of an essay, but it also states the importance of reading it. In a broader sense, the course has taught me that any work that lacks this element is inadequate and often less focused. Therefore, the necessity of including a strong thesis statement is something that the class has imparted in me as I seek to become a proficient writer. The metrics of doing an excellent research paper is another notable activity in English 301 class that greatly benefited me. Every time I sat at my computer, I often wondered how I could start writing a research paper, especially the elements that I needed to include to make it standard. Nonetheless, the various assignment and feedbacks that I received from the tutors in this course have significantly enabled me to acquire an array of critical thinking skills that I believe will allow me to undertake similar projects better in the future. Since the completion of the English 301 course, my confidence in writing comprehensive and content-rich research papers has dramatically improved because of this knowledge, as well as the seamless interactions I had with the lecturer and fellow students. Overall, the class was critical in improving my skills in undertaking excellent research work.
The role of signal phrases in write-ups was an exhilarating activity that I am happy that I had an opportunity to participate in the 301 class. Previously, I did not pay much attention to these elements when writing essays. Nonetheless, I have not only recognized their relevance, but also the strategies of effectively incorporating them when introducing a quote, a paraphrase, and a summary. In addition to marking boundaries, the class has enabled me to learn that these elements are useful in emphasizing the source and averting issues of plagiarism. Therefore, the English 302 was valuable in instilling in me the skills of incorporating signal phrases in essays.
When I look back to my time in English 301 class, I also take delight in the skills I learned about rhetorical strategies. This activity introduced to me three critical rhetorical strategies of making a good argument when writing an essay that seeks to persuade the readers. While I initially tended to include logos into my write-ups occasionally, I rarely used pathos and ethos, hence making my work lacking in richness and variety. However, I have since learned that an outstanding academic argument generally incorporates a combination of the three appeals to make a case. For this reason, my participation in this course was essential in allowing me to learn more significant insights into the application of rhetorical appeals in making good arguments.
Furthermore, I am happy that the English 301 gave me a chance to acquire skills in rhetorical analysis. This activity entailed gaining knowledge on undertaking an outstanding rhetorical evaluation of sources. However, the only downside of this lesson was the inability of the tutor to provide us with enough opportunities to analyze multiple articles. Instead, we only evaluated one online ad. Therefore, though I learned valuable skills about rhetorical analysis, I still believe I need more practice to the subject to perfect the required competences.
Conclusion
Overall, the English 301 class introduced me to many stimulating activities, which include how to develop a thesis statement, techniques of completing a research paper, the inclusion of signal phrases in write-ups, how to use rhetorical strategies, and how to undertake a rhetorical analysis. Besides learning the significance of a thesis statement, the class enabled me to learn how to make it strong and outstanding.
