The APA guidelines
Researchers, in totality, must understand the significance of writing influential manuscripts that add to the existing scientific knowledge through careful planning at every stage of the research writing process. The APA guidelines provide researchers with relevant information on how to write and format a manuscript for peer-reviewed journals. These guidelines have been adopted as the standard writing styles applicable to almost every discipline. The APA guidelines divide a manuscript into several sections that have specific rules of writing and formatting. Researchers are advised to take note of each section and understand their relevance in the quality of the entire research paper. These sections include the title and abstract, introduction, method, results and discussion, and tables and figures.
The title and abstract are significant sections of the manuscript as they inform the reader on what to expect in the entirety of the research paper. As such, this section is the most exposed and must be formatted as stipulated by the APA guidelines. The researcher should be creative in selecting a title that will capture the reader`s attention immediately. The abstract provides a summary of the significant sections of the paper in a nutshell. The writing guidelines mandate that the abstract be written on a separate page, with at most 250 words in total (APA.org, n.d.). At the end of the abstract, the researcher should provide several keywords or phrases critical to the manuscript. In the introduction, the researcher should provide a rationale for the research paper as well as a hypothesis that will guide the manuscript paper.
The method section should be clean and clear, characterized by qualitative and quantitative research mythologies. The APA guidelines caution researchers to acknowledge and denote any characteristics that may impact the results of the research methods. All measures in this section should further be appropriately referenced. The researcher should also provide clear information on the variables within the methods, including sample size, participants, research methods applied, among others. The results and discussion section should include all the analysis, interpretation, and data collected in the method section. According to the APA guidelines, results, both expected and unexpected, should be described within this section. Discussion of the results should begin with a clear statement that demonstrates the researcher`s support for or against the hypothesis relating to the findings. Additionally, the researcher should outline the limitations and significance of the study, providing further links to future research.
The tables and figures sections are essential in exhibiting crucial data associated with the research. In APA, researchers are not limited on how to present their tables and figures best, as long as they are presentable and self-explanatory. Researchers should use notes underneath the tables to describe part of the information not understood within the table values (American Psychological Association, n.d.). In the long run, the tables and figures should be well structured and referenced appropriately. As with other types of research papers, manuscripts should also contain a reference page at the end of the document. The page indicates all the references used by the researcher to write the article. All references should be sorted in alphabetical order and follow the author-date referencing APA style.
