Can Air-dry clay gets wet?

Air-dry clay is a handy product that can use in many craft projects. Air-dry clay also used to decorate your home with crafts. Air-dry clay does not need to be fired, unlike traditional clays that need to fire in an oven at a high temperature, or polymer clays that need to be cooked in an oven to cure. Air-dry clay is not a waterproof so it gets wet. This kind of clay hardens and cures at average room temperature, and once dry, you can paint and decorated in a variety of ways. One of the best ways to add feel and design is to use rubber stamps.

Air-dry clays are water-based; Although the rest of their ingredients can vary many air-dry clays, you’ll make the reception, and a few are often purchased. Air-dry clays all “dry” to harden because they’re water-based, So you can add water in clay as your requirement. Where most all other “clays” are oil-based and can’t technically “dry” because there is no water in them to evaporate out and cause hardening.

Air-dry clays must be sealed after drying, or they will not be waterproof, and that they must be sealed on every part and in every hole, etc. Or moisture can get to the clay and start to dissolve it over time leaving it softened, distorted, etc. The foremost common air-dry clays are permanent paints like acrylic paints (and other permanent ones) with durable clear finishes like polyurethanes. Permanent white glues (which won’t be as effective over time with dangerous water exposure), acrylic mediums, sealers/finishes “sold for” clays, etc.

How to make Air-dry clay waterproof

Air-dry clay is not impermeable. So it gets wet, and you can make it waterproof by the following method.

ingredient

  • Air-dry clay
  • Waterproof Wood Glue
  • FlexBond Thin-set Mortar
  • Exterior House Paint
  • Acrylic paint
  • Polyurethane Spray

Step 1: Make your clay piece, And then leave it for 24 to dry appropriately.

Step 2: Paint Top and bottom with h a mixture of waterproof wood glue and acrylic paint. Roughly equal amounts of each.

The paint thins down the glue a little and makes it easier to apply.

The color doesn’t matter at this point. Let again Dry it for 24 hours.

Step 3: Mix up a bowl of roughly 4 parts mortar to 1 part water. Mix as you slowly add water until you get a consistency you can paint. It should slowly move off your mixing spoon in a dense stream, something like cake mixture.

Paint your piece with the mortar mix. It will destroy your paintbrush after your done, so use an old one. The mortar doesn’t get digested into the red paste layer. It just kind of sits on top. Make sure you get full coverage.

There are two significant disadvantages when using this-set mortar.

  1. You lose detail
  2. You will have a rough surface

This method is only useful for certain kinds of sculptures. It’s excellent for anything made to look like concrete-like garden statues or gargoyles. Also, creatures with rough skin like dinosaurs, dragons, Godzilla, and starfish!

Step 4: Finish your paint job with acrylic paint, Then spray with polyurethane spray.

Just sealing the clay with polyurethane or varnish out the waterproof paste will make the clay water resistant but not waterproof. Eventually, it will dissolve.
