TIPS FOR STATEMENTS OF PURPOSE

“Do’s” for the statement of purpose:
- Keep in mind that the reason for this part of the application is so that the admissions committee can learn more about you that is not found in the other parts of your application.
- The admissions committee is interested in your academic and work-related life much more than family background. Include family background only if there something that you had to overcome or otherwise makes you different from other applicants.

- Develop a central idea (commonly called a thesis) for your paper. Your paper will be much more readable if it has a clear direction.
- Restate the thesis in the conclusion. This helps the committee remember you.
- Examples of your actions and experiences are more powerful than just describing yourself.
“Don’ts” for the statement of purpose:
- Don’t make negative statements. This includes dislikes, bad experiences, or lack of skills.

- Don’t try to be something you are not. Lying will get you into trouble.
- Avoid lecturing the reader. The professors already know the important parts of your field. Writing what interests you is fine, not writing general statements about your field.

- Don’t repeat vocabulary words. Carefully use a thesaurus (shift+F7) for variety.
