true cost film review
Globalization refers to transcontinental trade as well as travel systems (Jaggar, 563). It is the process in which businesses begin to become influential internationally and start making their trade with other countries all over the world. An example is the garment industry, which produces lingerie and jeans, among other clothes which operate on deadlines that their global corporate clients have set for them (Enloe, 578). Neoliberalism, on the other hand, is a concept that involves the revival of the ideas related to the laissez-faire economic liberalism that existed during the Second World War (Jaggar, 563). It is associated with free trade, privatization of resources government regulation opposition, and responsibility refusal of social welfare (Jaggar, 564).
The film true cost speaks to the impacts of globalization and neoliberalism in various ways. For example, one Japanese clothing retailer is making more sales in the US (06:34). To the retailer, this sees them make a profit through the massive sales. Sometimes manufacturers suffer from globalization where they have to cut down cost to accommodate potential buyers who are willing to buy their clothes at low prices so that they can go and sell them following competition from their fellow manufacturers ( . Employers in the industry also make profits from the low prices they dispose of their products to other countries. Neoliberalism impacts the workers working in the garment industry, where the owners of the industries ignore the legislation intended to protect workers and allow them to continue working in poor conditions (16:26). As a result, some of these workers succumb to disastrous occurrences in these environments, like the collapse of buildings and fire (08:56).
Yes, I have particular reflections after watching the first half of the film. Following the poor conditions in the factories found in Bangladesh, the government should become more keen on ensuring they are improved whatever it will cost for the sake of the safety of workers. Individuals should also be careful when choosing safe environments of working and should avoid working where they feel their safety is at stake.
