The PBS documentary, “Slavery by Another Name”, talks about how blacks in the US were not slaves but still not completely free. This event lasted 80 years. The documentary shows accounts of first hand experiences of the restricted African Americans. Many of the southern African Americans were still forced into labor against their will. The white mindset did not change much after the war. They always thought less of African Americans and tried everything to simulate slavery, albeit not legally slavery. Most of the black southerners were pulled back into labor because of the difficulty to make a new life for themselves and the strict laws enforced by the black codes in the South. While being prisoners, they would be forced to do many jobs without pay. On top of no payment, they were beaten and had to work in terrible conditions. They would work in coal mines and in fields. As prisoners, they would find themselves working many different jobs, such as coal mines and in areas. This simulated slavery as they were forced to work for free and had no rights.
