Dionysos review

There are many stunning features of the sculpture that I have observed as I went through its complexion.  On the sculpture, Dionysos is shown without his usual feature of drinking cup both his hands are empty. However, Spes appers to be holding what seems to be a bunch of flowers on her hand.  Based on this two features on the sculpture could be a possible representation of the positive side of Dionysos. Notably, Dionysos is a god who was believed to have a duo character in extending his authority and power.  The observed features could also be a representation of a historical celebration of peace where Spes is used to represent peace and on the other hand Dionysos is used to signify a god of celebration (Clarke, 177).  In this regard, the sculpture could have been used to show joyfulness at the end of a war.

From the themes of the two figures in sculpture, its physical sculpturing also has a significance. Notably, the sculpture was sculpted from marble in the attempt of making it smooth and carefully display the intricate details of the folds of Dionysos cloak and chiton.  There is no part of the sculpture was left rough providing a smooth element to it. This approach was meant to ensure that there no detail and themes that that were left out. The sculpture has a uniform colour with no alteration giving it a natural touch that is attractive and appealing to the audience.

As stated, the sculpture was created in the late 1st century and by restored in the 18th century (Bernabé et al. 34).  One of the evidence that can be used to confirm the restoration is the base that Spes is standing on. Evidently, the base is a bit rough that the rest of the sculpture and there is a change in the angular orientation and texture of the base. This is evident in regard to the sharply defined corners of the base relative to the folds of Dionysos cloak.

The overall feel of the sculpture are aided by the various artistic details. One of the detail is the presence of Spes.  Her hair is well defined to give a soft touch to the audience.  It is tightly curled in a series of rows across her head and this feature is a clear display of the refined art used in development of this piece.  Analysis in regard to Spes can also be shown by a review of the heavy pleats and folds on her chiton which are used to create smooth details in front of Dionysos cloak.  This detail was meant to focus the eye of the audience to the centre of the piece and ensure that the central theme are not lost.   This connection can be extended by observing the positioning of Spes hand. Notably, her hand is placed at about the same level with Dionysos midsection. This ensure that the   audience could see the flowers on her hand as there play and important role in illuminating the overall touch and feel of the piece.

The size difference between Dionysos and Spes is also vivid and also aids to the overall depiction and feel of the piece.  There is an element of naturalism developed based on the size of the two figures. Spes is obviously small and she is dressed in a more feminine apparel than Dionysos. However, this is not an indication that she is weaker based on the fact that despite the size of Dionysos, she appears to be supporting. The size of Dionysos shows his masculinity and his relative big size has a detracting effect on the naturalistic feel of the two figures.   The two approach gives the theme of the place that the two figures occupy in the whole artistic theme.

The pose of the two figured can also be analysed. Notably, there pose suggests knowing relationship between the two figures. In this regard, there is evidence of fluidity between the two figures based on the manner in which   Dionysos has placed one of his arm in a natural manner and his relaxed shoulders.  Despite the fact that the postures of the two figures are different, there is evidence of cohesion and intimate relationship between the two figures.   In this regard, they appear to be supporting each other which is a sign of complementation. There is evidence of a caring relationship and a sign of complementation between the two figures. Notably, every part of the statue draws attention to the audience based one the refined details in all angles.  The fine details are a representation of creativity of the artist who first created the image. Evidently, the face of Dionysos show detailed facial expression that shows that he is happy and composed. In this regard, the sculpture can be used to show a sign of a certain ceremony during the creation of the piece.

Markedly, the contents of the sculpture are arranged in a compact matter and there much attention paid to the 3-D texture of the piece.  Notably, Dionysos is standing on a contrapposto, which is a technique that was commonly used by the ancient Greeks to achieve a representation that is life like though shifting of weight.  This notion can be supported based on the manner in which Dionysos has been represented. He has massive libs with muscular and large curves that are different from the rest of the body. The exaggeration of his body shows his power and great strength. His posture provide an evidence of god. A detailed review of Dionysos show that the sculpture was developed during the period of the Classical Greece and there is evidence of Rome in regard to the type of clothes that the two figures are wearing. It is an evidence of the deep relationship between Rome and Greek artwork during this period. It was created to show the man intention to be strong in nature. This intention is created essentially through Dionysos clothing.  He wears the skin of a panther around his upper body. He is not holding any weapon which shows his abilities to overcome any type of animal or danger without necessarily using a weapon. He has features that surpasses those a man. His face is smooth with few contour lines, which is symbol of his health despite the fact that he is given a human form. His idealised qualities are further shown by his long hair that cascades onto his shoulders. His athleticism is shown by the crown of ivy leaves on his head. Notably, athleticism is as aspect that was given much attention in the Greek culture especially for the young people.
