EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN WOMEN

            Problem facing the Virginia Company

The Virginia Company was faced with the problem of low labor. The native women did not have the required skills to support the household economy. Virginia Company was initially interested in recruiting young men to work in the tobacco plantations. However, the high mortality rate of the American children necessitated the bringing of European men for the male laborers. The first solution sought was to ship European women to America with little facilitation by the male laborers. The Virginia Company also encouraged investors to facilitate the shipment of more laborers.

In summary;

  • The problem facing the Virginia Company was the lack of efficient labor.
  • The Virginia Company to facilitate the shipment of European women (Bojakowski, Katie and Piotr 2017).
  • The Virginia Company encouraged investors to facilitate the shipment of additional laborers (Goetz 2016)

            Why Choose European Women

             European women made the best wives for European mean with their superiority, skills to build a household and preserved dignity giving them a higher score than the Native American women. The Europeans being Christians were limited by their faith from intermarrying. Native American women were considered to be immoral and marrying them would mean the European faith was compromised. There was a greater exercise of independence of sexuality among the Native American women which depraved them of the expected European standards for marriage. The European women, on the other hand, were considered more civilized and able to bring stability and proper housekeeping in the colonies. The American culture of giving out women for sex was interpreted as a proof of prostitution, and thus the community was generally regarded as immoral. It was therefore much better to marry a European woman because both individual faith and the society would give the deserved support for the family.
