HUMAN RELATIONS AND SUPERVISION

ASSIGNMENT 1: ARTICLE SUMMARY

Due date: Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, by 11:59pm This assignment is worth 15% of the final grade.

Select one article from a business, management or supervision journal or magazine.

Articles may be found in print or digital publications from a library collection. You can use a full-text electronic periodical index or database, such as those accessible via your registering college library’s web site or your local public library, to find an appropriate article. If you registered at Mohawk, you can go to http://library.mohawkcollege.ca and then use your ID and password to access the databases. See the explanation in our course area regarding accessing electronic resources.

Articles must have been published within the last 5 years, and be at least 1000 words (approximately 4 pages) in length. Articles should be about supervision topics, such as those covered in this course. Some topic examples are: planning, interviewing, hiring, orientation, training, coaching, mentoring, motivation, delegation, performance review, employee discipline, communication, meetings, managing conflict, managing change or time management.[unique_solution]

Do not use an article that is already based on the library context, because one of the requirements of this assignment is that you apply the topic to libraries. As an example, a general article on hiring would be fine, an article on hiring nurses would be fine, but an article on hiring library staff should not be chosen.

Read the article and prepare a report, 600-800 words in length, to discuss the main issues in the article, your response to it and how this particular issue is relevant to supervisors in libraries and the information industry.

Include the following:

  • full publication information: author, article title, journal title, issue and date, and page numbers; if you found the article online, include the URL or DOI as well. You may choose to provide this information as a Works Cited list in MLA format.

  • a brief summary of the main points of the article in your own words

  • your own thoughts on the ideas expressed in the article and how it connects to our course material. For example: Do you agree or disagree with the author, and why? Do you feel that the article presents a balanced and unbiased approach to the topic? Why or why not? Are there other aspects of the topic that you felt the author should have addressed? What information in

the article was most surprising? How does the information in this article fit with what is presented our course text and first lectures?

  • an explanation of how you expect that these concepts could be applied in a library and information industry environment

Use these headings to identify the three sections of your report:

Write this assignment, and all assignments for this course, in sentences and paragraphs, not point form.

NOTE: A portion (approx. 20%) of each assignment’s mark is used to evaluate language skills (grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, word choice – proper usage, appropriate vocabulary) and organization (headings, paragraphs, visual appeal).
