Literary Essay on Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’

Introduction

The name Jane Austen invokes images of romantic comedies in one’s mind, shaped by her previous literary works. Her choice of wording is also in a light and teasing tone, describing a plot that is satisfying, especially to hopeless romantics with a good sense of humour.

Language

However, in Persuasion, there is a significant shift in the conventional casualness readers have come to get used of. There is a sense of solemnity putting emphasis on second chances and regaining love and hope. However, the mood is pessimistic and the general image of Austen by the reader is of a person who can be trusted.

Social Classes

In Persuasion, social and political upheaval as a result of wars transit into realism social class is considered important. It enables the readers to comprehend the behaviour of the characters throughout the novel. Sir Walter is shown to think that class is superior to money by constantly reading his own history with utter interest. It is also stated in Persuasion that “vanity was the beginning and the end of Sir Walter Elliot’s character” explaining his principles and stand.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Persuasion has both a realist and novel manner of genre. Anne Elliot, the central character is based upon a Cinderella look-alike. Romanticism is a major path that Austen follows in the conception of the plot. The fact that the aspect of romanticism is prominent provides the reader with eyes to peer into other people’s life behind closed doors and reflect on their lives as well. The ability to successfully detail real life enhances realism in the plot, offering insight into almost everything unknown to the reader, making the plot more relatable to the readers.
