Morals, values, and work

Values

Values are those intrinsic practices that shape individual psychologies. They formulate a framework and are designed by a person based on one’s beliefs. One thing that needs to be understood is that moral values are basic pillars for a person, and they are very vital for the possessor. Values can be good or bad. Some examples of values include truth, respect, dignity, loyalty, commitment, honor, freedom, care, cooperation, sacrifice, patience,  honesty, superstitious, socially destructive, impulsiveness, and so on.

Morals

Morals and values are not very different. Morals are shaped by society, while values are personal beliefs. Morals are basically the standards of behaviors. They are principals that differentiate between right and wrong. As the marine corps says “honor, courage, and commitment”. This motto is a standard behavior that is expected to be followed by every person in marine corps. Basically, there three benchmarks are the morals of marine corps.

My values

As a person, my values and morals were very much based on our society, family, and religion. During childhood, I was taught to speak the truth, be honest, avoid growing hated or jealousy, be respectful and respected, be cooperative, sacrifice things for the greater good, and so on. As I grew older, I reassured these basic and vital values during my school life and college life. I have developed some values so strongly that they have a huge impact on my personal, social and maybe professional life.

My core values include honesty. I believe that one should be honest and true to one’s self. If you are not honest with yourself, then you can not be honest with anyone. Then “truth no matter what” is the second most important value I possess. I was always taught to follow the truth no matter what the consequences are. Integrity and honor come next in the list. I believe that a person who has no honor in his/her life has no life at all. Honor and dignity are probably one of the most important values that can be in one’s life. Respect for yourselves and others, this is what I firmly believe in. Never back down from what is rightfully yours. I believe if something is yours, then you must take a stand for it. I also believe in sacrifice, cooperation, teamwork, hard work, loyalty and keep up the motivation level.

Work values or work ethics

Work ethics or values are a set of beliefs or ideas that are practiced or observed in a particular industry, occupation, or an organization. These beliefs or ideas are the core principals, and they play a very vital role in forming policies as well. They are influenced by laws, governments, politics, etc. They may include trustworthiness, integrity, fairness, loyalty, responsibility, accountability, respect, teamwork, etc.

My values & work values

There are certain commonalities in my values and work ethics. Teamwork or cooperation is very important in any job, and I believe I can do good in this department. Professional life demands honesty and being honest with yourself, with your work, is very important if you want to do good in your professional life. Hard work, loyalty, professional integrity, honor, being motivated and motivating others, all these virtues are very important in the work environment, and I believe that my personal values will be of great help in my professional life.

Trade-offs

When you enter professional life, so many things are contradicting with your personal choices or values. Businesses are conducted with a core purpose, and that is earning profits. Most businesses’ mission statements are devised in terms of profits or growth, and this may compromise dignity, honor, and integrity. What is good for society or people, may not be good for the organization’s objectives.

Sometimes you have to settle for lesser rewards (salary) for the work you do. I may have to work for a low salary while starting my career, although I believe that never back down from something that is rightfully yours. I will have to adjust in an environment that includes favoritism, backbiting, leg-pulling, or false accusations. But, as we move on, we adjust, adapt, and improvise according to the situations. I might have to compromise on these things while moving into professional life but, I will try my utmost best to focus on positive sides of professional life.
