Menace

The ability to do according to one’s wish without any obstacles is associated with power. The possession of power is exciting but excessive power is destructive especially if obtained without a struggle. The Hyperbole and a half is a humorous story about a child who gets an unwarranted sense of power that is received upon wearing a dinosaur costume. The child’s behavior seems to have begun getting out of control, and it takes the intervention of the child’s parents and teachers to take away the costume though the child feels powerless without the costumes and has to be forced into their healthy lifestyle. Everyone will go for power if a chance presents itself, but the most critical part about power is the ability to control and use power for the right purpose.

Given a chance, everyone will take power. However, power comes with responsibilities that have to be respected; otherwise, power will become destructive. According to Allie Brosh, “Everyone loves having the ability to make their decisions into reality…” The basic structure of functionality of power is that an individual thinks of an idea that happens and then decides to make the activity happen. Power is difficult to control and becomes dangerous when acquired by little children who cannot control power. The power given to children requires the intervention of parents and teachers to protect other children as well as the powerful child who might cause harm to themselves.

Excessive power is dangerous and destructive. When the child wore the dinosaur costume, a certain feeling of excessive power hit them. The child noticed that there was a need to find an immediate use for the power obtained. The first response to chase the other children around the school, causing chaos that could not even be maintained by the teacher. Brosh states, “All I knew was that being a dinosaur felt very different from being a person, and I was doing things that I had never even dreamed of doing before…” The difference between the behavior of the child with and without the power was that as a normal human being, the child had assumptions that she was not able to do the things she was doing, assumptions that were taken away by taking the dinosaur’s nature.

People obsessed with power become a burden to those around them. In the initial stages, the parents and teachers thought that the whole drama was a joke by the child. However, things seemed to get out of control, and immediate intervention was required to calm the situation. The parents specifically had to deal with a more serious issue of banning sugar consumption by the child, a ban that was met with severe resistance.  The parents had to keep a closer watch of the child to avoid extreme damages that would happen when the feeling of excessive power appeared. However, the parents eventually came to realize that the whole mess was caused by the dinosaur costume and not sugar consumption as had been thought before. The disposal of the costume became an end of a dominant power era.

Power, as much as the primary goal of everyone wishing to overcome the obstacles of dependence, should be taken with maximum caution, and only responsible people should be given access to power. Power should not be allowed to be accessed by children as this would only destroy them and create a burden to teachers and parents in helping the children control their power.
