Violence in Canada
Crimes can occur in many forms. It can be through cyber-attacks, physical attacks, or through violence. It is a difficult task to keep the rate of crime low because of the fast-growing population of Canada. This is majorly attributed to the environment in which children are raised. In most cases, some members of society find themselves involved in crime. This is immoral because it may lead to many impacts that are adverse to them. These effects of crime are also negative to society. Many of the individuals who engage themselves in crime come from households with low incomes. In addition to that, these people may come from backgrounds with a history of violence, for instance, their parents were part of the gang that used to terrorize people in the community. Furthermore, violence may arise due to some medical complications that these people have, which have gone unattended for a long time.
There are many families with low income in Canada. Also, there are many citizens in Canada who have come from different parts of the world. Many of these people come from poor backgrounds. This is because they consider Canada as an ideal place for them to find living. From the immigration department, reports indicate that it is not. This is essential because the population of Canada is growing up to over 37 million as of April 1st. There is space in Canada but there is no infrastructure for them. Most of the cities in Canada and some provinces could not compare to the number of opportunities available in Toronto. The immigrants have been left with little options for their living because the opportunities are inadequate. This makes the people indulge in activities that can enable them to generate an income needed for their survival. For instance, they consider things that are free of tax, such as selling of illegal drugs. Truly, the infrastructure of Canada is not as stable as it may seem to many people. The police are engaging in bribery to earn extra money that will improve their standards of living. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
The previous history of violence can be associated with the violence that is common in Canada today. Those people who have ever committed a crime tend to have some courage to indulge in the crime in subsequent cases. This is because they believe that the process that follows once they have been held responsible is the same as in the previous cases. It is common to find criminal issuing threats of committing crimes because he or she assumes that he or she has an experience pertaining to that act. For instance, the instance of shooting in schools can be attributed to the previous record of violence for the alleged criminals. Those who have been held responsible for the act seem to relocate to other places so that they can commit the same vice.
Medical implications are also another cause of violence. For instance, people with mental illness are likely to engage in crime. Patients with severe mental problems have contributed to the vulnerable group that takes part in the crime. This can be attributed to the symptoms that these people have. For example, impaired testing of reality and poor planning can make them vulnerable to assault. The relationship between violence and the medical condition is shown to be complicated though. From the report by NESARC, the state of the mind has been confirmed to be associated with crime primarily through clinical threats and unemployment among the people who are mentally ill. However, this victimization of the people with medical impressions impairs the quality of life that these people lead.
An example of a crime that happened in Toronto, Canada, was reported by Al Jazeera. It involved a mass shooting, in which two people died on the spot, while thirteen were wounded in the occasion. A man was just passing in the streets of Toronto and started firing a gun into hotels and cafes. However, the response from the police led to the death of this criminal. He had shot fifteen people. This incident took place in Greektown. Those who were killed were a woman aged 18 years, and a girl aged ten years. The gunman was a man 29 years old. When he was conducting the crime, he was having a horrible face. This was seen by one of the witnesses of the occasion.
In this case, the police took the initiative to find out the cause of the violence. It was better if the suspect could have been caught alive to help in explaining the motives behind the shooting. This can be attributed to the mental state of the gunman. However, the police chief in charge of Toronto promised to look at the possible motives behind the shooting. The victims were rushed to St. Michael hospital, where five of them were in a critical condition. Lifesaving operations were performed on three of them. A video revealed by one of the witnesses showed the dressing code of the man. He was wearing blacked clothes and a hat that was black. He was seen firing indiscriminately from the sidewalk. The gunman was shot dead by the police during a heavy exchange of gunfire.
The gunman might be associated with some of the concepts and theories for violence. For instance, from the way he was talking to the woman, and the girl whom he shot dead, he might be mentally challenged. He simply commanded that they get out of his way as they approached the tattoo shop. This cannot be a justifiable reason for killing them. A rational human being cannot engage in crime without giving reason. The paramedics and firefighters went to the scene as well. They covered the popular restaurants and the hotels in Toronto. This shows the response towards crime that should be availed in the state. The response of the police was also timely. This helped them to face the gunman before he advanced the shooting to many people.
There is a question that pertains to the authorities which license the ownership of guns in the state. For instance, in Canada, some people have twenty or more guns which they have bought. The policy that pertains this needs to be revisited. This pertains to the medical implication of these people that buy guns. The reason for having to buy such guns needs to be investigated thoroughly.
The response of the media is critical as far as crime is concerned. Sometimes people may not be aware of the events happening in society. But through the reporting by the media, society comes to know the happenings at a crime scene. This is pivotal in making the community ready to combat crime. For instance, measures can be availed to help in detection of a possible threat of violence after a report by the media.
The society needs to be prepared to ensure that they curb the occurrence of crime. The society should find solutions to those people with medical conditions that may be a risk factor for the occurrence of crime. This entails the establishment of centers for these people to facilitate their rehabilitation. Moreover, regarding the issue of low income among the members of the society, there is a need for the state to identify viable ventures that will empower these people. This is crucial in cases where crimes are committed due to a craving for the elimination of poverty. Crime due to poverty is common in many parts of the world. This can be portrayed by simple acts such as the attack on shops to steal goods and even robbing banks.
The gunman in Toronto was untrained. This was revealed by the tactical experts who had gone through the video which was posted on social media regarding the crowd shooting. However, the report also portrayed that the killer had experience on how to use the gun, implying that the 29-year-old might have conducted those shootings earlier on in some other places. Confitming the theory stated above that crime is associated with prior history. This contributed to the confidence to carry out the outrageous act in broad daylight, even when there were many people watching it.
The family of the killer stated that Faisal Hussein was suffering from mental illnesses that were severe. This confirms the theory associated with crime. People with medical implications may indulge in crime. This requires that their families need to take extra care to ensure that they do not get out of their sight unaware. Engagement in crime does not necessarily require training. From the case study, this man was not trained. This was revealed in the videos, showing the way he was moving while shooting at his target.
In conclusion, violence is a vice that takes many dimensions in the society. There are many repercussions for this. From the case study, the gunman was shot dead by the police. At the scene of violence, the police could not identify that the man was having challenges with mental health. Therefore, his family can be blamed for having allowed him to hover around the streets, having knowledge of his mental condition. This implies that society can be blamed to some extent, regarding the violence that may be witnessed in the day to day lives. There have been many shootings in other countries also, and in which the family members claim that the alleged criminals were of an unsound mind.
The policies entailing possession of guns are also to blame. It was not explained how that man owned the gun. It good that the state takes an initiative to ensure that people who have no criminal record are the only ones allowed to own guns. In addition to this, evaluation of the medical condition of a person is crucial when it comes to licensing of guns ownership. This will surely help to combat crime in the society.
