Snapshot
Many people have different preferences in regards to the pets that they choose. In the USA, it has been found out that about 48% of households own dogs in comparison with the 40% that own cats as their pets. The reasons for the varying percentages have been explored for a long time. One of the claims that have been deduced from the snapshot is that stereotypes are one of the game changers in the process of choosing the pets that each household can keep. According to USA Today (1), 56% of American adults agree that they could keep cats if the stereotypes that exist about cats are removed.
In contrast, there is the issue of the impressions that people have about having dogs and cats for pets. Since time immemorial, cats have had a not so good reputation due to the stories and myths that have been flying around. However, 66% of the adults in the USA have a negative impression towards cats (USA Today 1). The impressions thus create a situation where many people prefer having dogs for pets as compared to dogs.
Finally, despite the higher rate of households with dogs as pets, most of the American adults believe that cats are always great pets. The rate of such people stands at 77% (USA Today 1). In addition, the American believes that cats are easier to keep than dogs, given the way that they relate to humans in the household. The thing that is baffling about these statistics is that they favor having cats as pets while the actual number of households having cats as pets is lower than those with dogs as their pets.
