THE YELLOW WALLPAPER ANALYSIS

The yellow wallpaper is a charlotte Perkins short story that is narrated in the first person through a collection of notes that are gotten from a diary. The story is one of the American literature of feminism that was created in the 19 century. Feminism is a subject that can’t be avoided in our society today, and such a story becomes an exciting phenomenon to learn about in literature. The writer of the short story aims to condemn sexual politics that results in a kind of misogynic treatment.

My first expectation is to get the deeper meaning of the yellow wallpaper since the first thing that gets to my mind is to decode is the message behind the yellow wallpaper. Then this makes me get to the first paragraph eagerly to get a glimpse of the whole story. After the first interaction of characters, I am interested to know the flow and relationship between the narrator and John. More so, my interest is to know if their conflict will have a solution in the end.

`                     The story has a flow of characters that do not change to the end of the story. This is a recognizable kind of story since John and the narrator is a pointer of gender inequality that is all over in society today. The narrator begins her story by the amazement of the grounds that her husband has taken for summer vacation, and grandeur of the house (Gilman 2019 ). She complains about her husband by the name of John, who also happens to be a doctor. She complains are that her husband is not concerned about her health and her thoughts altogether.

The narrator of the story is identified as a character of the story all through. The story is narrated in the first person point and uses both past and present tense. The narrator has written the story in the present tense, but she recounts events and conversations in the past tense. John, the husband to the narrator, thinks that he can make decisions for his wife just like a child and that she would remain comfortable in such a state.

The characters of the yellow wallpaper are the narrator, who is a young married woman and a mother of one, John, the husband to the narrator who is also a physician, Jennie who is johns sister and acts as a housekeeper to the couple, the woman on the wallpaper and Mary who takes care of the newborn. The narrator is the protagonist since she can narrate her own story to give a lesson to the society and more so she undergoes a transformation. The obstacle of the story is John, who stands on the narrator’s way of making her own choices. My expectations do not change with the characters since they portray the picture of today’s society in real sense.

The story takes place in a room covered with a yellow wallpaper as a way of treatment to the narrator’s mental illness. It takes place in the year 1885. the narrator is forced to move from the mansion to a lonely, isolated yellow wallpaper room according to her husband’s orders. The story is written in a prose that consists of 83 lines that are divided into 39 paragraphs. Then the items are structured like a journal in a style that is informal and impressionistic (Gilman 2019). The vocabularies are simple to understand and not complicated in a way to give leader problems following the story. The story has got figures of speech where the author attributes human characteristics to an idea, a thing, or an animal. The wallpaper is described as an entity that is living. The woman in the wallpaper is also used as a metaphor.

The narrator is seen to be in a state of anxiety, a lot of hunger, and depression. The reader is left feeling sad about the whole situation and the way the narrator is treated and curios to know how the story will end. The yellow wallpaper represents the structure of the family and traditions that the narrator finds herself trapped. The central theme of the yellow wallpaper is that of the oppression of women based on gender. There is also the appearance of the issues versus their reality. There is also the need for self-expression and the liberation of women from the feminist way of oppression.
