Digital platforms are one of the fastest-growing markets in the field of news media. The digital platform mainly consists of a web-based platform that include various contents such as twitter, Facebook, websites and blogs. The evolution of digital platforms has resulted in the development of both positive and negatives impacts in the news media. In response to our class project, digital platforms have led to the spread of fake news that ultimately undermines the independence of journalists and the trustworthiness of news.
Twitter is one of the digital platforms that have been primarily used to undermine the independence of the journalist and the trustworthiness of the news. Feminist twitter, Asian American twitter and the black twitter are some of the platforms that have been used by different individuals to share and raise awareness concerning issues of interest on their terms and conditions without waiting for the journalist to take an interest. As a result, the public members have developed a low level trust in the digital platform. It is miserable how the participants express their negative view of news outlets other than taking the responsibility of representing the positive view. It isn’t very easy to trust the mainstream publication as well as the new TV. People think that the news on TV is not accurate, and there is a feeling there are opinion-based other than being established on a fact base.
Face book is our other digital platforms that have mainly been used to undermine the independence of the journalist and the trustworthiness of the news. For the last three months, Facebook has been used in a negative way to influence the United States presidential campaign. Face book has heavily been used to spread top-performing fake election than the major news outlet such as the Washington Post, New York Times, NBC News and Huffington Post among others. For a period of three months, Facebook was actively used to spread false stories from fraud sites hyperpartisan blogs that generated numerous reactions, shares and comments on Facebook. Face book is doing nothing to combat the spread of fake news. Though the spread of fake news, it eventually did not swing the election. This is a clear indication that the bogus stories have an unbelievable spread on the network. They’re so much of fake stories on Facebook that always seem like a top true story. Such stories always attract great attraction, but they hardly represent a minute fraction of fact. This is a clear illustration of false election news that has been taking place on Facebook. An example of these kinds of fake stories is among the top five election stories that have been running on Facebook.
Some of the questions that have been raised from this response are on the measures that should be put in place to control the negative impact of digital platforms on news media. From my observation, it remains that social media continues to be the best way the public can acquire news. On Facebook, one can quickly receive news from every part of the world. On twitter and other relevant digital platforms, it easy to read and keep track of the latest developments. With such, it is therefore necessary to appreciate digital platforms and social media by avoiding the spread of false news. Through this, it is confident will promote the independence of the journalist and the trustworthiness of the news
