Not every type of meditation is suitable for everyone.

In a world full of mistrust and with the many ups and downs, it is almost impossible to survive a day without consulting the inner you about this or that, hence meditation has proven to be one of the best therapeutic agents of healing. Meditation involves focusing on one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for emotional, spiritual or physical purpose or relaxation. Some may argue that meditation has enabled them to cope with stressful situations, increasing self-awareness and creativity, reducing negative emotions and increasing patience and tolerance.

According to the study conducted by health line it is estimated that more than 300 million people in the world suffer from depression. And according to life science the highest rates of depression are ages between 40 to 59 based on data gathered from 2009 through 2012.This are people who prefer to keep it all in and not to share their problems. The study also revealed that only 30 % seek medical assistance the rest go through psychological therapy, a high number of people who can’t afford the expenses prefer meditation.

The average meditation time is 20 minutes 2 times a day subject to how used you are to it, experts’ advice that depending need one can meditate either daytime or bedtime to help fight fatigue and insomnia. When practicing the act most people think that meditation will offer them “happiness”, “peace” and “bliss” and often end up disappointed even more and wasting minutes and hours thinking about their problems and “solutions”.

An average person will meditate 20min as mentioned early but experts on meditation advice one to take up to one hour, so the possibility of overthinking is higher for patient who practice meditation compared to normal thinkers. And as a result, the patients will rely on a negative approach to the problem due to their negative emotions after overthinking.

When meditation is done in excess it can cause physical pain such as headache due to excessive thinking, body aches and irritation as a result of wrong postures, fatigue, weakness, dizziness and even sitting discomfort and knee pain after years of practicing.

As humans we have a tendency to procrastinate in either big or small things, but we will still try and accomplish the task even if sometimes we leave it half way, but meditation makes it worse as it demotivates someone into losing interest in things one used to enjoy , we prefer to think about the problems instead of fixing them.

In a study carried out by researches from Brown University in 2017, where they examined 60 meditation practitioners. It was revealed that practitioners of meditation are mostly people who want to keep re-living their past, by claiming it improves their memory. During meditation the memories from past tend to keep resurfacing as the process continues. If they are happy memories, well and good but for other patient who have suffered traumatic experiences in past years, Meditation can seriously damage their currently life by releasing emotional and mental blockage. This people will experience hallucinations, anxiety, grief or anger, and at the end of the day they will only achieve being frustrated, feeling ‘spaced out’; depressed.

 

A study conducted by Deane H. Shapiro,Jr.,professor of emeritus of psychiatry and human behavior at the school of medicine at the University of California, Irvine in 1992,the participants were more aware of their negative qualities after meditation and as a result they feel loss of basic self and loss of ownership ,because they will keep dwelling and repeating the same thing over and over, reliving the same mistakes and feeling the same pains.

 

According to Zana Marovic, from University of Gordon Pelvic 2014, reveals that different meditations favors different type of personalities. The techniques for extroverts who are always on the go and can’t relax, stress easily and have adrenalin overflowing the body and have the frequent need to balance their hyperactive system, Yoga Nidra meditation is advised. But this kind defers from the meditation that will be done for a depressed person, so before one indulges on meditation, you should have wide spread knowledge or seek an expert opinion on the matter so as not to endanger your psychological life.

 

The spiritual purpose of meditation is to help one connect to yourself and know in depth who you are, it also help you develop your relationship with our Maker, but many of us can attest to the fact that, the more you think about your spiritual self, you many tend to feel more confused . if you don’t have positive results you will likely lose faith and have more un answered questions than before.
