Guidelines for Writing a College Essay
Composing an essay is a common task for students in high school and university levels of education. Many students find it challenging to compose an essay. Below is a compilation of guidelines to help you write your school essay at ease.
- Read and understand the assignment: before you begin writing your essay, first read through the question asked, and ensure you know what the examiner wants you to address. Ensure that you know the type of essay you are required to write. Note down other requirements that you are supposed to meet in your article, i.e., number of words or pages.
- Chose a topic that will best fit your essay: in most cases, your examiner will give you a subject that he needs you to discuss. In case it is not provided, you will need to brainstorm and choose a topic by yourself. Ensure you select toa subject that you are familiar with, and excites you. It is also critical to select a topic that you can get plenty of materials to use in your composition. In case you don’t understand what you are supposed to write about, consult your examiner for assistance.
- Look for materials that you can use to get information or ideas to use in your composition. For some articles, you will need to conduct some research to get the information that you will use in your paper. Others you will have to visit your library or go online to search for information. Record all the information that you feel is relevant to your article. Do not be in a rush to collect data. Good ideas might take time before you find them. Thus, taking breaks and revisiting the search later will help significantly to come up with quality ideas.
- Develop your essay thesis: this is a statement that will explain the relevance of your essay. It should be wide to allow you to have enough content to write about. It is the main focus of your paper and should be used in the first paragraph of your composition.
- Draft an outline: arrange the information gathered in a format that you will use it in your paper. The framework is the skeleton of your essay. It helps to achieve a logical, well-organized flow of ideas. The structure should have an introduction paragraph, at least two body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
- Draft the essay: start writing your paper following the list of ideas, as stated in your outline. Write your introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs. In case you use information from other sources, make sure you cite the sources correctly.
- Proofread your essay and ensure it is free from errors. Re-read the assignment instructions and ensure that you have answered the question correctly.
