Why is day by day suicide rate increasing in America?

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a report on Thursday. According to their report,

47,143 people died by suicide in 2017. But, in 2018, the number is 48,344 & the increasing percentage is 2.10%.

From this report, we can see that the number of people who dies by suicide is continually increasing. From 1999 to 2018, the suicide rate is now 35%. But why the suicide rate is rising? What’s, are the reasons behind this increase? Family problem, financial crisis, misunderstanding, or depression?

Pneumonia/influenza and suicide: among the ten main reasons of death only for these two reasons, the death rate in 2018 has increased a lot.

A clinician and board member at the American Association of Suicidology, named Mr. April Foreman, said that “”I was 100% unsurprised. That’s not acceptable. We need to start treating these deaths seriously and respecting these survivors by upping our game in public health. Science and care’s noting system have stand fixed. ”

According to statistics, among 1,00,000 people, 14.2 dies because of countries’ 10th prominent death cause suicide, though the scope of the problem alone belied by that rate. Every day, millions of people make suicide attempts. Each year, thousands of people end their life by suicide. According to the CDC, nearly

10.6 million American adults seriously thought about committing suicide, 3.2 million made a plan, and 1.4 million attempted it in 2017.

There are thousands of theories about suicide, but more critical is to create awareness. Some expert thinks that lack of funding is responsible. Many countries don’t want to donate money for building a suicide-related awareness camp.

In 2017, for suicide prevention, $103 million spent by the most significant public funder of biomedical research in the world, named The National Institutes of Health. On that year, only for breast cancer study, they spent $689 million. But, death by suicide number is more significant than death by breast cancer. In 2018, investment in suicide prevention projects was $147 million, slightly larger than the previous year.

According to may experts, suicide problem is impossible to solve because many people don’t want to understand that suicide is also a leading problem. Mr. Foreman said that” “We’ve tried a lot of things, including telling everybody just magically to know the signs and care more. I don’t think that’s going to work. We haven’t tried spending at the scale of the problem, and since we have tried it with other diseases and it’s worked, there’s no reason not to try it.”

Many experts also said that the silence of the suicide prevention community is also responsible for increasing the suicide rate in America. Most of the time, their hopeful interventions didn’t work. After that, the city takes another response but doesn’t make any adequate steps for executing the intervention.

Dese’ Rae L. Stage, is a renowned suicide survivor & also the founder of a project. The name of his conducted project is “Live Through This.”

This project work with the people who survived from committing suicide. “Live Through This” enlarges those people’s voices. Moto of this people is, “If our whole goal is to help people, then we need to help people, and that requires a little bit of critical self-reflection on ourselves and the field.”

Some experts suggest that for reducing the suicide rate at first, the suicide prevention community has to talk with the people who are suffering from discrimination, economic insecurity & larger societal ills. Supervisors believe that depression is not a joke. It can drive people to the path of “suicide “.

Stage said that” “It’s not like someone is just broken. All these things happen in their life that break them. Abuse, poverty, homophobia, marginalization. Are we too focused on the individual and not enough on the systemic causes of suicide?”

In January 2020, The Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health published an article. In their article, they reported that it’s possible to reduce suicide rates only by increasing $1 wage. According to the CDC, when a graduate remains unemployed, he is mentally disturbed. This kind of mental disturbance can increase the risk of suicide.

This January, a new project named “Phase II of Project 2025,” has declared by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The aim of this project is reducing suicide rates by 20% by ten years. In this project, four things will be given priority:

health care systems

corrections systems

firearms

emergency departments

The suicide rate will be at the lowest price in 30 years if the Foundation can execute Its plan successfully.

“We want to reduce this rate by so much by this time,” is a standard line used several times by the many suicide prevention community in the history of suicide prevention.

“I think that’s the right goal, but I don’t see us insisting on the … changes that we would need to get there,”- said Foreman.
