He served as the U.S marine in the Pacific. His mother, Filomena Florence, was from an Italian migrant family. Regis was raised in a Roman catholic setup. He had a younger brother (20 years younger than him) who had asked him not to mention him on press or television. His brother died of cancer in January 2007.

He attended Our Lady of Solace grammar school and later attended Cardinal Hayes high school. He enrolled in the University of Norte Dame, where he earned his sociology degree. Young Regis Philbin was a weight lifter and later a boxer while at the University.

Regis Philbin is married to his second wife, Joy Philbin, and has four kids. Two with his first wife and two with the current wife.

Career

Philbin served in the U.S navy before unleashing his potential to be a media personality, author, and writer. He started as a stagehand and later moved to write the news. In 1961, he began hosting The Regis Philbin Show. After he featured as an announcer on the Joey Bishop Show in 1967-1969, he moved to do other talk shows like A.M Los Angeles, Live With Key, and Ryan (1983) The Morning show (1983) which was later changed to Live in 2001. The Regis Philbin Show (1981), among many more.

He hosted several game shows like The Neighbour (1975), Almost Anything Goes (1975), and Who Wants to be a millionaire (1999), which become one of the best TV shows. The show was later canceled in 2002.

His game career did not end there; he hosted the Who Wants to be a super Millionaire in 2004. He had hosted this show as who wants to be a millionaire in 1999. This show was again canceled within four months. Regis is a very focused, talented man; he went ahead to revive the ABC’s This Is Your Life in 2006. This was a show he had hosted back in 1952.

In 2006, he hosted the American got talent show alongside Brandy Norwood, David Hasselhoff, and Piers Morgan. In 2013-14, he organized the sport-themed panel Crowd Goes Wild.

He has also done several movies. Some of the films he has featured in are, as himself in Ugly Betty( 2008) Halverson in Hope & Faith (2003-2006) Xi Zao Pi in Less Than Perfect (2005) and as himself in one episode on Damages in 2008.

He retired in 2011. But, he still appears in the television shows. An example is the Fresh off the boat, where he was a guest in 2019.

Regis and Kelly teamed up to co-host Live. The two were not quite a match as Philbin was a grumpy older man while Kelly was a young soap opera actress. Although, the two made it work by hosting the show-Live for 11 years. The two seemed very friendly on the television, but off the cameras, their relationship was soared. After Philbin left the show in 2011, their bond even became weaker. He told Larry King that he and Rippa don’t keep in touch anymore. Philbin thinks Rippa is mad at him for leaving their show. In an interview with the Insider, he said he left the show because he felt too old to be that show.

Regis said, ‘I think it would be fun’ in one of his interviews with the Insider when asked if he could host the Live even for a week. He also opened up about being invited back to Live.
