Restraints on an ICU patient who are on vents
Introduction
A physical restraint together with sedative agent or alone assists in health care especially through aiding in supporting the devices used to provide life support treatment. They include arterial Cather’s, drains and trachea tubes among others. Physical restrain leads to patients discomfort during the ICU stay and causes psychological trauma (Samhsa2016). In my assumption Evidence Based Practice is applied in all nursing practices to ensure effective health care. Some medical devices that limit a patient’s movement when carrying out surgical procedure in attending TBI patient was used (Samhsa, 2016). They help keep the patient from hurting herself or causing injury to others. Some of those used are Posey, McKesson Medical-Surgical, DE Royal, and Skill-Care .BSN medical .They are very helpful in handling any surgery patient.
The PICOT questions used fall under therapy and its prevention, diagnosis, etiology and prognosis. They are discussed below using PICOT format in my evidence based practice.
- Population problem
Identity of the patient, Health status, age, sex .This aids in getting enough information of the patient.
- Interventions
What should be done to the patient? Specify tests conducted, therapies and medication
- Comparison
What is the alternative to intervention? Is there any different type of treatment, totally there is no treatment.
- Outcome
After treatment what are the results of the patient condition? Are there any more symptoms, less symptoms or no symptoms of the infection? Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
- Time
What is the time frame that you expect your patient to recover from the infection?
- Recommendation
What is your recommendation on the patient? Whether he should stop using the medication after recovery or should continue?
- What are the precautions that the patients should take?
My patient is 27 years old; race is African, sex Female she is suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI).This results mostly from fall, gunshot wounds, vehicle accidents or falls. We have different types of brain injury which include bleeds in the brain called epidural hemorrhage and injury to brain tissue such as contusions of the brain (Samhsa,2016). The patient has rapid acceleration of injury; she was involved in bad road accident which led to shearing of her brain tissue a condition called a diffuse axonal injury. The serious problem she has is elevated pressure in the skull.According to Samhsa(2016),TBI is acquired brain injury which results when the head violently hits an object orpierces the skull, the patient symptoms are mild, moderate or severe depending to the type of damage. Some symptoms of an individual suffering from this infection are ringing ears, blurredvision, and mood changes among others.TBI treatment is conducting surgery to remove the blood, epidural hemorrhage or a part of skull in order to remove the pressure in the brain. I will also administer a special medication to lower the brain pressure (Samhsa2016).
Anybody suffering from this disease should receive the treatment as soon as possible, due to the fact that very little is done to return the brain into its normal condition. Medical specialists should be targeting at inserting proper oxygen supply to body and the brain. While ensuring adequate blood flow and appropriate blood pressure (Samhsa, 2016). Neck and skull x-rays is done to those with mild injuries to check for any fracture or disarrangement of bones (Samhsa, 2016). Rehabilitation consisting of individually tailored treatment program is the treatment given to severely injured patients. We also have occupational therapy, physical medicine, language therapy image test and social support.Approximately most of the head injured patients need surgery. The resulting disabilities according to the strength of the injury age and general health of the person under treatment and less symptoms will be noticed within the first two weeks, after seven months the patient will result to full heath.
In conclusion TBI can be treated if only proper procedure to identify and diagnose and treat isapplied. This is achieved by keenly investigating a phenomenon or the patients or population problem using numeric dataand statistical analysis. As a result this is descriptive it identifies the problem; it gives prediction on how to prevent or treat such problem in future, and identifies the main cause of the problem (Samhsa, 2016) Patient must be restrained during surgery procedure.
