 DNP-NP paper

Instructions

We have been following a DNP-NP who is studying the health of a group of staff nurses at a large hospital. The following data, some of it to be used for demographic purposes, some of it in addition to what we considered last week, has now been collected over the course of several months…

Week 5 Dataset (Excel) (Links to an external site.)

The DNP-NP has posed seven new research questions and hypotheses for a series of studies with this group (for simplicity only the Null Hypotheses are presented here). For each question, using the algorithm provided in the resources folder of this module and SPSS, (a) determine which test should be used, (b) perform that test, (c) report on your findings to include the significance (p value) and if this is significant or not, and (d) make conclusions based on the Null Hypotheses provided. Present each test result in one brief paragraph in one Word document using APA format guidelines.

  1. Research Question 1: Is the BMI of the nurse participants different than the national mean BMI? (Use PRE-BMI and the CDC reported value for the national USA mean BMI of 26.5.)
Null Hypothesis 1: There is no difference between national mean BMI and the BMI of the nurse participants.
  2. Research Question 2: Do smokers have higher BMIs than non-smokers? (Use the PREBMI data for this question; do not use the PREGROUP BMI Variable or Post BMI variables.)
Null Hypothesis 2: There is no difference in BMI for smokers and non-smokers.
  3. Research Question 3: Do nonsmokers have higher levels of exercise than smokers? (Use the Pre-Exercise Level Data for this question.)
Null Hypothesis 3: There is no difference in level of exercise for smokers and non-smokers.
  4. The DNP-NP has implemented a diet education program for the nurses and has this PICOT structured research question…

Research Question 4: For (P) staff nurses, does the (I) implementation of a diet education program, as (C) compared to not having a diet education program, (O) result in a decrease in BMI? (Use PREBMI and POSTBMI, do not use the BMIGROUP variable.)
Null Hypothesis 4: There is no difference in BMI following a diet education program.

  1. The hospital where the DNP-NP is conducting these studies has a large cardiac rehab facility. The DNP-NP was able to get approval from administration to offer free memberships to the hospital gym for staff. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week; there are some times during weekday business hours when due to full patient loads the gym is not available to staff. The DNP-NP has this question about the new gym membership program.[unique_solution]

Research Question 5: For (P) staff nurses, does the (I) implementation of a free gym membership program, as (C) compared to not having a free gym membership program, (O) increase staff nurse exercise levels? (Use the PRE and POST Exercise Level variables.)
Null Hypothesis 5: There is no difference in exercise level when staff are provided with a free gym membership.

  1. The nurse researcher found a weak positive relationship between participants in her study having diabetes and being smokers, it seems that having a diagnosis of diabetes is related to also being a smoker. She has formulated another question to study this further. Her new question is this:

Research Question 6: In nurses is there a higher frequency of smokers in those who are diabetic as compared to those who do not have diabetes?
Null Hypothesis 6: There is no difference in frequency of smokers in those who are diabetic and those who do not have a diagnosis of diabetes.

  1. The nurse researcher has also collected data from the sample of nurse participants by administering a survey on job stress and job satisfaction. She has read that high levels of job stress in nurses may be a contributing factor to nurses being overweight and obese, and that job stress is related to lower levels of job satisfaction, which has been linked to poorer patient outcomes; she plans to do further research along these lines, to actually attempt to connect patient outcomes with staff nurse BMI levels. For now though she wants to answer this research question:

Research Question 7: Do nurses who report being satisfied with their jobs have lower levels of job stress than those who are not satisfied with their jobs?
Null Hypothesis 7: There is no difference in reported job stress for those who report being satisfied as compared to those who report being dissatisfied with their job.
