Gettysburg address

Introduction

President Abraham Lincolns Gettysburg address was just over 250 words long. However, this piece of speech has a more considerable significance to me personally. I do consider it the tremendous political discourse of all time. It explains America’s critical challenges in their historical context. At the same time, it pays more excellent attribute to the men who perished in the face of the many challenges that he talks about. Gettysburg address did serve as the turning point for the civil war. I the address di reflect significantly on the critical elements of the challenges that most of the men who even lost their lives went through for America to be the great nation that it is. This essay is a personal reflection of the significance of the Gettysburg dress with the greater meaning of what he did talk about.

The words of Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address does qualify as the most memorable words ever spoken in the history of social event. Many Americans and other people from all over the world do recognize phrases in this brief speech.  Some can even recite the speech word by word. After the delivery of the address, some of the parents and teachers did start asking the young American to memorize the speech word by word. This is an indication of how famous this speech was to most Americans. To me, this speech is an indication of an in-depth understanding of the role that effective use of language can play in generations.

The address through to others might appear like it was a lamentation from the president. To me, it seems more of the celebration of a victory for the men who were involved in the war. It was a way of acknowledging the key challenges that the soldier went through but also reflecting on the level of endurance that they did display at the battlefield. In the address, Lincoln did acknowledge the sufferings that the men who most of them died underwent he says, “The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract” (Lincoln, Line,8). This is an indication of the higher power that these men did possess. This speaks, to me, is a demonstration of the top will demonstrate that presidents Lincoln had to support the soldiers amongst the challenges that America had as a country.

The Gettysburg Address does indicate something about the possibility of languages; how best it can be used in creating something simultaneously useful and beautiful.  Lincoln manages to create one very unique use of the English language in the speech. The words of Lincoln’s address does strike my mind and evokes the pleasing kind of rhythmic precision of Shakespeare kind of communication. However, Lincoln’s fundamental mystery of the language of English in the address even shows more in the manner in which he conveys to my mind ideas that strengths far beyond the mere sum of the words used. To me, the address is a demonstration of a clear articulation of language use and knowledge to bring out am everlasting information without having to give a speech that lasts for the whole day.

The excellent quality in the address is achieved by the three distinct sections that deal in the past present and the future of America. The speech to me is a show of the rich history that the country has, the preset life that we live and an indication of what the future expectations of the country are. It is a real definition in all possible dimensions.  For example, I do believe that the memorial opening of the speech, “Four score and seven years ago- is the discrete echo of the languages that was formerly used in the Old Testament. This language does not only points America back to the nation and its founders but also elevate this address and those men to the level worthy of the highest reverences and he respect which they did deserve as a result of their unmatched level of selflessness.

From the tiny but fitting kind of appreciation of the past, the address turns us to now and here- the presents. This, to me, is of a great significance as it explains the element of success the change of the language use. Lincoln, in the Gettysburg Address, manages to witch our attention and engages us in the various aspect of the civil war. He acknowledges the sufferings of the American soldier on the battlefield. Lincoln says, “It is instead for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honoured dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God(Lincoln Line, 12) This to me is very powerful and shows much about how he did view these soldiers. He had a massive love and appreciation of the work. This, I believe the world has wanted to pass the same kind of perception to his listeners to acknowledge the men who died in the great civil war.

The Gettysburg Address contain various lessons to me. One, however, essential teaching that I do get from this speech is the aspect of understanding the Americans challenge. Lincoln, in the address, defines the actual cause. It also shows the magnitude of the problems that America was being faced with both in the past, the present and even in the future. The Gettysburg Address did summarize the entire American challenge in 272 words an element which is unique but comprehensive. The address is concluded by the president’s call for Americans to rededicate themselves to the advancement of this cases so that “the government of people, by the people for the people shall not perish from the earth”. This is an indication of the care for humanity that Lincoln had. Besides, The English language use is also very significant to me as it is very poetic and exciting in tone.

Conclusion

The significance of the Gettysburg Address is that it is a restatement ad reaffirmation of the other high expression of the Americans mind. It is a declaration of independence. It is a show of the difference that exists between the foundation of America’s political document and the speech meant to inspire millions. It has enlightened many generations and teaches millions of Americans of the importance of the great civil war that the country had.  I believe this speech is one of the most reliable foundations of America as it serves as a reference point to all Americans in one way or the other. For this reason, Lincolns Gettysburg Address continues to be and will always be the high expression of the political principle in the history of humanity.
