Statement Addressing the Selection Criteria

Engineering Management unit equipped students with knowledge of organizational structure and strategies. Skills and approaches used in directing, controlling, planning, and forecasting within an engineering and a related organization also learned. For a graduate to work effectively, they need to meet various selection criteria discussed below.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Engineering departments have long considered having weak communication skills, both verbally and even in writing. However, due to the dynamic society we are in, this observation has lost its essence because the engineers produced now are, equipped with excellent communication skills through project-based assignments that allow the student to meet and discuss in formal and informal sessions. Undergraduate engineers training, trains them to communicate with colleagues and other staff in order to make work more comfortable, and this enables one to work effectively in any setting given that they can pass information without ambiguity.

We propose an integrated student-centered learning environment through project-based learning and peer assessment (Requena Jesus, Fèlipe Alonso, Belen Ana, 2010). Peer assessment allows students to share information and results, thus enhances the communication skills among engineering students. Peer assessment improves the ability of an engineer to not only improve their communication but also to become a good negotiator in developing the best products in an engineering organization or other related organization.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

While working in assignments in a group of two or more, the discussion allows an engineer to be able to work with others, accepting their ideas and opinions in order to solve significant and complex problems. Potential employers expect students to gain proficiency in working as teams through experimental learning. In order to solve complex issues within the organization (Lingard Robert, Barkataki shan, 2011). Students are needed to have high proficiency because there are employers who only want the most qualified candidate for any given job. An engineer must, therefore, be able to provide excellent service in a good time. Since employers tend to be strict to ensure they get the best product to the market, an engineer should be able to borrow ideas and invent others in less time.

The collaboration of students among teams reduces demands on faculty and time, and effort in both formal and informal sessions of meeting this ensures the production of highly innovative engineers (Lingard et al. 2011).

21st-century employers want an engineer who can handle problems and fix them fast since time is an excellent resource in any engineering organization. The engineer is supposed to be flexible to other ideas and opinions of others as well. That allows them to be more productive since sharing of ideas improves individuals and thus high profit to the employer in a competitive market.

Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work without supervision.

An engineer having undertaken the engineering Management unit develops good interpersonal skills as taught. The society we’re in today requires an engineer with more developed social skills to enhance them to deal with the demands of different environment satisfactorily and to engage stakeholders to work collaboratively (Lopes Daniele, Cecilion Mateaus and Aparecide Zilpa, 2015).

Employability includes the ability to find employment and remain employed. Employability also includes hard and soft skills in both formal and personal characteristics (Senior Carl, Cubbidge, Nillson, 2010). The present society considers good interpersonal skills to engage more stakeholders. And technical-vocational skills are becoming less important as society changes; the employer wants an engineer who can relate well with clients as well as machines, this allows the engineers to produce what the client needs(Carl et al. 2010).

it is of much importance in producing goods that are needed by the clients because it increases the demand for the product and ensures that no raw material goes to waste. High proficiency is not only required in working as teams but also in handling client needs (Lingard et al. 2011)

In conclusion, it takes an excellent resume to land on a good job, but maintaining it can be a challenge because of many reasons in the market. Furthermore, there is no easy work, and we work to solve day to day challenges. The attitude an engineer has at work is due to their interpersonal skills, it’s important to maintain a positive attitude in order to display the best of good interpersonal skills and to work collaboratively with stakeholders.
