REFLECTION JOURNAL

INTRODUCTION

The most successful and prominent people on the job market were one-day leaners and with little or no experience in their areas of specialization. Hard work pays, investing in knowledge gives the best profits in one’s life. I have been working hard in the course work to ensure that my future is bright, and I meet the expectation and standards I have set for myself. This reflection will purposely review my placement activities and responsibility integrating all topics and knowledge that I have learned in class. The following information is going to analyze my personal experience and lessons acquired outlining the areas needing improvement and how I think I am prepared to enter the competitive job market. Some of the topics featured in this discussions include the professional and ethical behaviors in the workplace, the goal-setting unit, the workplace relationship, my roles I the workplace, the leadership roles and the examining goal in the workplace relationship. Having done this course, I have been empowered by the theoretical knowledge and skill that I have learned in class and applying the same in the fieldwork could give me the best experience and skills.

Regarding the above information, I got my placement at Boulevard club in Canada. I worked here as a prep cook; Boulevard club is among the best private clubs in Canada. The company’s mission statement says that it is the lakefront multisport club that offers lifelong quality programs and services to the esteem customers which are beyond the collective expectation of the community members. This was my best place to nature me as a prep cook.

PROFESSIONAL AND ETHICAL BEHAVIOR UNIT

In the workplace, most of the workers might face a challenge when it comes to issues of professionalism and application of ethical behavior. Professionalism is essential to workers as it paints the image of the company that they are working into the society at large. Having very responsible employees with the highest degree of respect to the community and fellow workmates enhances unity and cooperation of the employees. Professionalism goes hand in hand with the workplace ethics; there is the essence of showing respect and obeying the workplace rules and regulation, this is most probably achieved by workers, mostly when they work according to the workplace standards and the expectation of their employers. The management and the supervisors also should be the leading in showing the workplace ethics and professional behaviors so that the fellow team members below them could imitate and emulate their skills and behavior. Working at Boulevard club as a prep cook, most of my day to day activities, I observed and applied the professional and ethical practices that I had learned in the class. Additionally, the management of Boulevard club organized for regular workers seminars and meeting, which helped to teach the new employees and students on the field on the appropriate behavioral and ethical behavior needed.

GOAL SETTING UNIT

Goal setting unit was purposely aimed at making the students in planning for their future career. Developing goals and setting objectives in life is associated with many aspects of life, such as changing the student’s perception of their skills and career advancement. Working in Boulevard club, I was involved in some events and seminars which were purposely training the new employees and students on an internship on how to plan for their career. I deliberately had learned a lot and got so determined towards meeting my goals.

Interestingly for the time, I was working in the Boulevard club as a prep cook, I come up with some goals which I believe could guide me all over the period I was in the career placement. Some of the goals that I had set and achieved during my internship are, improving my knife skills, and through the observation and training, I mastered the knife skill. This is a very competitive skill to a prep cook. Learning the skill of butchering was another thing that resulted to making me very competitive and learned, I also got mastery in grill station and how to use the machine entirely, in the pasta station I also achieved my goal in knowing how to see the pasta machine and make dough lastly, I am happy together the skill in making any salads according to the recipes provided, this was a goal I had in grade manager. Generally, from my work experience at this company applying the techniques, I learned in the class, helped me to set goals which graded me towards making my stay at Boulevard club successful and of importance in my life.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT UNIT

This is a very relevant unit to any student out there, as it prepares and equips us with the appropriate knowledge and skill that we need while we are preparing our resume. It’s true that if any person wants to be more competitive, I career they should show higher-good skills in making the best resumes. This skill was perfect to me when I joined Blouvard club, the manager and one of my supervisors took me through, step by step of writing the best resume. Interestingly I could integrate the skill I learned in class and ended up upgrading my resume to fit all experiences skills, academic competence, personal details, and profiles as well as the key competencies and all relevant skills which could make me the best in the event of the job opportunity. Above all, I was encouraged by my team members who were fellow cooks and the kitchen crew, as they happily presented their resumes to me for comparison and saw their skills and competences. I leaned the effective ways of making a resume and am happy now that my resume looks better than it was before.

EXAMINING WORKPLACE RELATION UNIT

This is a unit that I mastered every detail that we learned in class; it was beneficial to me since, as a new worker in Blouvard club. I had to take some time to understand my fellow team members and adapt the workplace standards. I was sufficiently pleased to see observe how the employees had better communication skills; I was fully welcomed and introduced to every role and duty that was assignments to me by the chef. Who become my best friend in less than a week, we exchanged a lot of ideas, I was taught the most essential communication skills that I should display as I get to interact with my fellow workers and the whole kitchen crew, Moreover I was privileged to get on one on one interviews with the management who congratulated me for showing a better communication skills and promised to offer me the best of the training and help towards reaching my goals in life. Back at the centennial college, I was involved in class discussions and attended lectures on practical communication skills and how to interact with fellow workers in the community to ensure proper and healthy working relationship. I applied these skills, and all I could receive were positive compliments and congrats for being the best prep cook of all time at Blouvard club. I took this as a motivation towards my future careers

LEADERSHIP AT WORK UNIT

In every competitive job environment, there are some factors which need to be considered when determining the workers’ competency. Among the key ones are the leadership skills, during my course, I was prepared very well on the leadership skills, types of leaders, and the characteristic of leaders and the worker’s expectation by their leaders. Interestingly I also come to learn the roles of leaders in solving the workplace conflicts and managing the employees towards achieving the best goals in life. Interestingly as I joined Blouvard club with some critical skill on the types of leadership skills I would expect to see, though, I had researched on the company reviews I was aware that it has the best leadership and is the best place to equip me with the best skills I expected. Upon getting into the company I landed into safe hands of the Team Leader in the kitchen staff, I was pleased to copy most of his behavior, no cases of bullying or showing differences between the new and old employees. This made my placement success as I could interact with the supervisors, the manager and even the owner of the club, I was verity equipped with the leadership skills, and it’s my pleasure to see the leader am becoming as I prepare to get into the job market.

In conclusion, field placement aims to equip the students with the best skills and knowledge according to their career. I feel grateful to both centennial college and Blouvard clubs for playing significant roles in nurturing me career-wise. I have learned a lot, and I believe that as I keep struggling to meet my goals, I will apply all the skills I learned and be the best prep cook.
