The Reverse Outline

The Reverse Outline is a reading tool that allows us to look closely at each individual paragraph in order to gain a better understanding of the whole text. Here’s how it works: For each paragraph, you’ll describe what the author is doing, what the author is saying, and the key terms or words she uses to do and say these things. When you’re finished, you′ll have what resembles a blueprint of the essay that breaks down what it says and how it says it. Let me give you an example using Matthew Goulish′s essay ″Moments of Exhilaration″: In the first paragraph, what the author is doing is he’s presenting a problem (the problem being that criticism only changes the critic). Next, what the author is saying is “If we accept that criticism only changes us, not art itself, then perhaps we can discover more productive ways of reading literature and viewing art.” By paraphrasing this paragraph in my own words, I’m internalizing the paragraph’s meaning. This way, I understand it better and I’ll remember it longer too. Finally, the most important words in this paragraph seem to be “criticism, change, limitations, open-minded thinking vs. narrow-minded thinking.” Template for the outline will be uploaded[unique_solution]
