Interview record

So this weekend so the so this interview is based on the assignment 2 for the leadership experience which is the teach us how to manage the team and the experience leadership in the workplace.

The 1st question is how would you describe your approach to leadership I would say that my approach is very collaborative because then when you are working in a team if it’s less about telling people to do things but more about team effort, personally i really care about how my team feels as well honestly though it’s impossible to always put that into factor every time just because then you have operations going it could be very busy people were pulled into 50,000 directions and sometimes I might just forget about how sometimes things you say might come out to be perceived differently maybe when you were saying tell him to do something your tone is a little bit different it also means to them like so you’re trying to be rude but that obviously was not what you’re trying to do but I would say being collaborative making sure that your team mates is also being on the same page as you know exactly what you’re expecting to.

2nd question is what has influenced you to approach to leadership, any purpose of the visit things or any persons like early career that I kind of Spire yeah for sure definitely I would definitely said there are several different things that really influenced my approach to leadership first one would definitely be by the team mates that I work with um the leaders that I worked with and also mentored me and also myself now being a leader as well the teams that I lead myself definitely let’s show me different aspects every team every property that you join every brand that you commit to theirs always going to be different people in a group of people so you have to instead of just putting into factor of what the whole team is like you also need to understand what each of their personality is like as well how you communicate with one it’s not it’s not always the case that you communicate the same way into another okay

the 3rd one what pain points did you experience in your climb to leadership um I would say that um one of the most difficult things with me leadership is always finding out how to communicate clearly with different colleagues as mentioned different individuals have different personalities essentially communicating with them a little differently to be most effective to each person being able to find that specific communication with each person call Papa says one of the difficult things being a leader and how are you how did you manage this key points continuously practice when you make a mistake obviously see that’s a point where you can find an opportunity to learn and those carry throughout your career.[unique_solution]

4 how do you define exemplary leadership lead by example so lead by example so essentially you do as you talk, we talk as you do meaning anything that you expect others to do you do it yourself as well and

5 what contributes to they explain exemplary election consistency because then as mentioned exemplary essentially is just leading by example and if you want everyone to do the exact same thing standards processes everyone needs to follow that specific process

6 what approaches to leadership have you found ineffective and why um I would say being very commanding um essentially commanding is in a way of using fear I would say to end using power to get things done but that really takes out the human aspect of it the caring part of it and also the bigger picture of it it may possibly be                                                                                        able to allow you to get the task done currently in this moment the longevity of that is definitely not sustainable this number

7 question is how do you determine which approach to leadership to use in a specific city of situation I would honestly say that this is um pretty hard question to answer because then as you mentioned every situation is different um how you determine leadership by honestly will have to say that you have to essentially it’s done by practice the more experience you gain the more understanding ur of situations and how to talk to people and how to communicate effectively um I know there’s no black and white with leadership everyone has their own way and some people would just view you know how some leaders seem like a really enjoyed working with this leader I don’t really enjoy working as its leader Why is that they have different leadership styles but some may be more effective in some situations and this one might be more effective these situations so there is no really black and white answer to that and

8 what is the most rewarding being a leader um when you’re viewed as a leader it’s not above your role because managers there’s a position from contractor call the manager and such when you’re a leader it’s actually something that people view you as of your characteristics of your personality and how you’re able to perform its more about your person and less about what you are so honestly what is most rewarding about it is honestly seeing how your team mates your coworkers and colleagues can benefit from it

9 what challenges have you faced as a leader and how did you respond I would actually bring this back to question #7 finding that specific approach for different situations that’s probably one of the hardest things that you would be able to experience as a leader you could have colleague so happy of different reasonings some of them are even out of your hands some of them were out of the workplace some could be based on personal lives and how are you going to work around that and I think those are the only type of the challenges that you really receive as those different situations that occur you have other situations where it can be really 22 colleagues in a workplace that are not getting along how do you approach those I would say the challenges comes with these different situations come up and how you react to it account gave example like i said that you can have like one colleague saying another colleague is lazy is not doing anything you can have another colleague saying I’m doing too much and you can have a colleague saying like I’m having personal issues and This is why my performance at work is not holding up to standards you can have many of these situations but how are you going to approach it and how you going to make it better those are the challenges

10 how did you communicate with the workforce as in the workforce as trying to come into hospitality let the entry levels or it’s more like employees in here um I would say as mentioned earlier is very different depending on case by case basis but if you’re obviously communicating in a group it’s always going to be very clear expectations it’s not going to be singling any people out it’s always going to be as a group if per say that we have on I guess concern against complaint it’s always addressed as a team rather than singling individually that this person but this but we will always make the reminder to everyone in the group saying this occurred as a reminder we just want to make sure that we’re always doing these for all the guests with succession so it’s a group effort

11 what translations or changes have you experienced the other leader over the years yes definitely not taking things personally that’s probably 1 thing that really opened my eyes as being a leader visual leader you deal with essentially always be Are you deal with it essentially always be with people and throughout the years you’ll realise that there is going to be a lot of emotions that come with that because your colleagues could be unhappy your colleagues could be discontent an none of those things are actually really washing majority of the times those are not even targeted towards you but because you’re experiencing these negative emotions that could really bring a lot of effect on your own personal emotions but I think that’s throughout the years it really made me realise that none of these things are really personal and to really when you out of work is spending your time at your own personal life and not really drowning at work emotions

12 what kind of characteristic do you have to help you to become a successful later honestly I would say I mean I don’t like to boast about myself but open to opinions that is probably one of my I would say one of the greatest things that I do have is I’m willing to listen What I believe is that when I’m somebody’s talking to me I’m listening and i’m not saying a single word once they’re done then I’ll talk and during that moment I’m talking I’m hoping that the others will listen and that’s just the respect I like to give to other people and hopefully same respect that I received back listening is a very very powerful skill that you can have because you can pick things up that that’s actually what they’re trying to say you have communications with some people that they say a lot of things but some of those things don’t exactly really matter you’ll pick up things that they say that actually truly matters to them and those are the things that you need to focus on you be able to solve the problems and

13 how do you improve the employee experience um as mentioned Jesse the characteristic like you just talking about is to really just listen to them why because when we address that concern you as a manager as a leader your job here is to make sure that they are happy at work and be able to hold up with the standards that were expecting here and to be able to improve their experience here is to really listen to their concerns and dressing those concerns as quickly as possible 1 two is if you’re not able to address it immediately is to give them updates give them a timeline that you’re working on it and any of the roadblocks that you may have and experiencing was why that it’s getting delayed you just want them to keep them in the loop the whole time

13 one more question is just like as different people like working specially housekeeping Department have people have strong personality some people are really humbles like when you have a hard time communicating or giving order to employees who have very strong personalities do you have you win between communication have you change your leadership style the way they talk you talk to them or like go extra miles to build an actual communication wisdom definitely definitely so as mentioned different individuals in your team’s you have different personalities being able to decipher what type of personality they have you changed the way you communicate with them stronger personalities tend to be out say a little bit more understanding you were trying to sometimes avoid would be able to kind of pick out the right conversations with them pick the right time also to do things as well so perceive you know that they’re having a bad day it’s probably not the best time to have an argument with them they never really want to have an argument with a colleague anyways but you choose the right time to speak with them emotionally you choose the right words to say to them to get the right response is in the way you’re not really manipulating any people but in the way if you want to have effective communication so you also need to put into perspective that people that are more introverted such as people that don’t really like to talk doesn’t mean that they don’t care or that they don’t have their own views you just need to try a little harder to get those out of them

14 when you ask a leader like for the housekeeping when it clean their rooms did you sign like some people get along with each other some people just have different priorities they don’t get along with each other and was a culture difference how did you sign them liking the team how do you like like assigned work with housekeeping there is teamwork involve it’s quite a lot however when you’re holding assignments for rooms it’s usually work alone to finish room assignments as mentioned there’s a lot of actually other teamwork components involved to it in all honesty work is work life is life so whenever you have time so you might understand that there are times that some team is complain about each other in the end though it’s still a team effort and they all understand that we just need to bring the group together just to talk about where the kingstar and then work together to finish to be able to get to the finish line together

15 we move to the last question is was significant message do you have for us and to the next generation of leaders good luck I mean being a leader as mentioned is not about getting a position so you can be housekeeping manager you can be a director of housekeeping you can be a director of the region um doesn’t necessarily mean that you are a leader because driving results could also be a way of measuring how you are at your position however does it measure how you are with people and to me leadership is actually developing the people around you to the best at their capable of it’s not exactly just about a title that you hold you can be a front desk agent and you could be a great leader it’s honestly really about effective communication being able to understand the emotions around you so that’s um a great understanding of relationships agree understanding of what to do in certain situations an person that is relied upon people that look up to

16 do you have your mentor or the leadership enjoy work experience will do other month I actually have a number of people that I admire leadership wise throughout my time working in hospitality I’ve met several of them i’m not too sure if you want me to name them on record right now but essentially there there’s definitely a number of them when I first joined the Fairmont hotels that was already like public off the Top of my head I could probably think of 5 at the Fairmont Vancouver airport definitely hear my current leader Laurent Dominguez director housekeeping she’s probably one of the strongest leaders I’ve ever worked with and a definitely learned a lot from her about how communicate with the team and what is some effective communication skills to use in certain times and what’s the greatest thing that I’ve learned from my leaders is in times where you may find disagreement with someone rather than questioning or being in disagreement with that person ask them why understand where there coming from and that’s probably one of the biggest things that I’ve learned being a leader leaders
