The Meaning of Tyler’s Kiss
What Tyler’s Kiss Symbolizes
The narrator experiences excruciating pain as the lye that Tyler pours onto his hand, burns away his skin and flesh. When he tries to meditate as a coping mechanism, Tyler draws him back by saying, “Come back to the pain” (Palahniuk 1996). Tyler wanted the narrator to experience real pain, which he likely had never felt before because he had led a comfortable life. Tyler’s kiss serves as a rite of passage to initiate him into his project to bring change. The narrator is supposed to endure the pain to prove his loyalty to the cause and his willingness to follow Tyler’s commands. While a kiss is meant to be pleasurable, this one comes with immense suffering to symbolize the gratification that would come from overcoming the challenges they would encounter on their mission. The author selects to combine the kiss with pain to show the dystopian view of reality that the narrator had.
How Tyler’s Kiss is a Contradiction
Tyler marks everyone who becomes a member of Project Mayhem with his painful kiss. The kiss is meant to test the determination of the new recruits because it is permanent and painful. Tyler began Project Mayhem to destroy the mind-numbing consumerism that has many people feeling repressed. Establishing trends is the key to keeping consumers wanting more products that they really do not need (Miles 1998). By branding every member of Project Mayhem with his kiss, Tyler establishes another trend. In the end, all the members replicate the mind-numbing and repressive pattern that they are trying to escape, which contradicts Tyler’s goal. The contradiction may indicate the futility of trying to escape reality instead of accepting it and dealing with it. Tyler’s kiss might also be viewed as a mark of strength and determination. Members of Project Mayhem, who got the mark, were fed up with the consumerism of their country; and were ready to do anything to effect change.
How Tyler’s Kiss is Comparable to Other Symbols
Body modifications are an essential part of many cultures. In modern times, tattoos are common and usually mean something to the people who choose to get them. One of the tattoos that is common in today’s society is the semi-colon tattoo. It symbolizes solidarity against mental health issues such as depression, suicidal thoughts, and addiction (Wolfgang & Kwon, 2019). It serves as a constant reminder of the strength that the individual has to overcome the challenges that they face because of their mental illness. In the same way, Tyler’s kiss serves to remind the members of their commitment to Project Mayhem. The pain that they have to endure symbolizes, losing oneself for the greater good. While most body modifications have a personal meaning to the person, Tyler’s kiss was used to show group affiliation. It was meant to promote unity in the organization because all the members had gone through a hard time together.
