Author’s Intent

The author’s intent in literature refers to the way the author delivers the message to the audience. Authors can present their ideas as a story, song, or poem, monologue, dialogue, among other forms. There are five significant types of author’s purpose can be achieved. First is by writing an expository through which they state and explain facts or give instructions to the audience. The second approach is through narration. In narratives, the author shares ideas in the form of a story. If the author’s objective is to communicate their point of view, they share their opinion on a subject through expressive writings. Another strategy used by authors is persuasion, and the objective is to convince the audience. The fifth approach is the descriptive approach by which the author stimulates the five senses. The main reason why the author, the author’s intent is important is that it determines audience engagement and shows the author’s competence in the discipline.

The mode of writing in ‘A Rose for Emily and the yellow wallpaper’ is a narrative. In the short ‘A Rose for Emily’ author narrates the nature of the relationship that Emily had with her father, the boyfriend, and his society in Jefferson City. In ‘The Yellow Wallpaper,’ the author narrates the mental and general health state of an upper-middle-class woman. The current state of the wife is presented as an issue further aggravated by her husband and healthcare care provider, who represents the male and societal perception towards women. The second similarity is on the theme. Authors through narratives manage to show how subordination of women in society.

One area the two stories contrast is on the presentation of a point of view. Charlotte Perkins Stetson, in her story, the yellow wallpaper uses a first-person narration point of view. In the story modes of the ideas communicated to the audience are the wife’s opinion and thoughts. Wiliam Faulker, in his story a rose for Emily, uses third-person narration. Symbols used by the author signify woman state in the society, especially on issues of relationships.
