A critic of the Arts
The art picked for this assignment is Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper between 1495 and 1498, which comes from chapter 3 of the book.
Descriptive Critic
The famous work of Leonardo stands out for many reasons, including its structure. The large white triangles draw the depth of the image whereby Jesus is focused as the central piece of interest. At the same time, all the disciples are shown in groups of threes, while Christ is solitary at the center (Martin & Jacobus, 2018). Judas, the third from the left, is looking away to show his difference from the rest of the group.
Interpretive Critic
The work by Leonardo mainly focuses on the use of oil as a mechanism for long-lasting images. The piece is, however, worn out as it is preserved. Besides, the work represents the biblical aspect of the last supper that Jesus shared with his disciples before he broke it to them that one of them would betray him. The disciples are in three groups as they discuss among themselves as they could not believe that anyone of them would betray Christ. Judas, the third on the left, is facing away from the others as though to suggest his guilt regarding his upcoming betrayal.
Evaluative Critic
The use of oil in the paint emphasizes the standards of perfection that Leonardo aimed at achieving. Oil was renowned for creating abstract and definitive details in pictures such as depth, sharpness, among others. The insight of the image is to identify the betrayal of Jesus by Judas during the last supper. As the other apostles discuss who would betray Christ, Judas looks away to hide his guilt. Elements have damaged the painting. It is, however, inexhaustible as it has withstood time to relay the painter’s perspective.
