MET Discussion Question

Parents or guardians to children with disabilities need to take part in schools’ academic decision-making process, especially on matters related to their young ones. The role of the parents or guardians is, primarily, to provide specific information. According to Logsdon (2020), the parents ought to provide information concerning their children’s strengths and weaknesses while at home. Additionally, these parents/guardians need to provide background information concerning their children’s development history, highlighting the milestones reached and those not achieved. What is more, the parents or guardians must suffice information on any family factors that can influence or affect the child’s learning process. As if not enough, Logsdon (2020) confers that the parents or guardians must offer insights into whether the current strategies and instruction are of any assistance to the children in their learning process. Consequently, the MET team should use the information to support the formal evaluation process. Primarily, the team should create an all-encompassing formal evaluation process guided by the information. This means that the evaluation process should be tailored such that it evaluates each child based on the presenting special needs. An ideal way to adapt the evaluation approach is to create different evaluation formats.

This is essential as it ensures that the evaluation process is characterized by fairness.

After discussing with my mentor about the way they have prepared students for the demands of given assessment formats, I gained some invaluable insights. For example, I established that the teacher has screened the children and then provided reasonable accommodations for the students. This outcome is indeed in line with Hayes, Dombrowski, Shefcyk, and Bulat (2018) recommendation that a teacher in a classroom setting in which there are students with special needs have conduct vision and hearing screening and then implement the necessary and appropriate adjustments and modifications. The teacher must seek to ensure that the system does not impose undue or disproportionate burden (Hayes, Dombrowski, Shefcyk, & Bulat, 2018). I also learned from my mentor that he has championed for appropriate accommodation in the assessment conditions for his students who have disabilities. According to him, his success has fundamentally been due to suggest the use of evidence-based evaluation approaches. The mentor has performed an in-depth scan of the existing literature on the evaluation of special needs students and then documented what works and what does not. Consecutively, the mentor has performed a mock application of the methods, hence proving to the school that they are indeed appropriate for the children with disabilities. The school has reacted by integrating the evidence-based techniques into the curriculum.
