Three killed in Italian prison riot against corona rules
A ban on family visits has revolted in four Italian prisons. Three inmates have lost their lives.
Prisoners in four Italian prisons have rebelled against tighter regulations introduced after the outbreak of coronavirus in the country.
In that case, three inmates have died and others have been injured as a result of the rebellion.
It writes several Italian newspapers, including La Repubblica.
The rules include, among other things, prohibiting family visits to contain the spread of infection.
Inmates in prisons in Poggioreale in Naples in the south, Modena in the north, Frosinone in central Italy and in Alexandria in northwestern Italy have all revolted over the measures.
Unclear circumstances regarding deaths
The worst thing happened was in the prison in Modena, located near Bologna. This is where the three deaths happened.
– We had already warned that there was increased tension in prisons and that we feared it could end in a tragedy, the Italian civil rights group Antigone said in a press release.
– All necessary measures must be taken to ensure the full rights of inmates, to stop the escalation of the situation and to prevent other accidents. A death is one for many, it says.
Wounded prison officers
In Modena, two prison officers are injured and about 20 people have had to leave the prison.
The Prison Officers’ Union, Sappe, reports that about 80 inmates have been transferred to other prisons after the riots.
Italy is the country outside China that has recorded the highest number of deaths due to coronavirus.
In total, 366 people have lost their lives. The number of coronary cases confirmed is 7375.
The majority of deaths are recorded in Lombardy in northern Italy, which is the most affected by Italy’s 20 regions.
