Movie Analysis

“Lincoln (2012) was written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner, directed by Steven Spielberg, and starred by Daniel Day Lewis. It was released on November 16, 2012. The movie narrates the story of Lincoln terminating the Civil War, restoring the unity of the US, and indorsing the obliteration of slavery towards the last bit of his life. The time span of the whole play is from January 1865 to April 15, 1865, which is about 100 days in total. This is the final stalemate in the Civil War, but it includes many important events such as ending the war, reunifying, adopting the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution, and the assassination of Lincoln (Holzer 65). The first shot was a hand-to-hand picture of the war. It was bloody, cruel, and oppressive. Although the atmosphere was slightly relaxed by the subsequent dialogue between the soldier and the commander-in-chief, it basically laid the gloomy lens style of the whole drama. Most of the scenes take place indoors, so there are many close-ups of the characters. In general, the director did not devote himself to a grand narrative routine, and the footage of a few significant battles was more about inheritance and integration, and to promote the development of the plot. Appreciation of this film requires at least the thickness of a monograph to complete. It can be said that it is a movie supported by excellent dialogue. The main dialogue takes place mainly in the House of Representatives. Various parties have conducted an orderly and fierce geological inquiry, speech, and debate on whether or not the bill has been passed. It turns out that quarrels can still be quite artistic. Indeed, the entire content of the film is compatible with Haas, Christensen and Haas claim that “all films are political.” Dialogue becomes a political theme in the movie Lincoln (2012). Live dialogues within the first family, decision-making meetings of the administrative staff team, Lincoln’s confrontation with the leaders of various factions, peaceful negotiations between North and South, and Lincoln’s funny, humorous snippets are some of the politically-instigated themes covered in the movie. Political undertones and powercrafting deals usually precede the formation of governments that influence both power structures and policies which affect the population.

Rejai’s section on Democracy and quite a number of concepts in this chapter are substantially useful for evaluating the Lincoln’s movie. From the film. A tactically launched comprehensive PR for Democratic MPs can be seen (Rejai 24). Led by Secretary of State Su Huade, a secret “canvassing unit” was formed. In particular, more than 60 Democrats who were about to retire would implement a comprehensive underground public relations operation, and strive to win another 20 pivotal votes in favour. From this perspective, these actions can be said to politically and democratically strategic. There is also the use of personnel appointment power held by Lincoln’s government to provide “job opportunities” for members who are about to lose their jobs. Moreover, other political interests exchange deals away from the glare of the public. Towards the end, Lincoln personally launched a warm offensive. Regarding the key minority votes, Lincoln went out personally, invited interviews, or visited homes, and worked diligently.

Abolition of Slavery was yet another aspect of governance in the Lincoln movie. Slavery has a long history in the United States. it has existed even since the North American colonies were founded. The Constitution of 1787 after the War of Independence was still legalized. With the expansion of the western colonies and the industrial revolution, it even developed. As of the Civil War, slaves had grown to nearly 4 million people in 1860, and three-quarters of them worked in plantations. Slaves make up about a third of the total population of the southern United States. We also see the underhand government deals during the late Civil War. At that time, Lincoln was committed to pushing Congress (the House of Representatives) to pass the thirteenth amendment to the US Constitution, namely the repeal of the slavery bill. Around the bill, representatives of both sides of the war and representatives of various parties engaged in a fierce debate.

Another democratic stance and tough underground government deals can be seen in Article 13 amendments. Compared to the Chinese people’s familiarity with the famous “Declaration of the Liberation of Black Slaves,” the amendment to Article 13 of the Constitution is not well known. The birth of the United States Constitution in 1787 and its nearly 230 years of growth, the Constitution has developed into effect 27 constitutional amendments, providing a stable institutional framework for this nation-state. From the film, it is evident that the Constitution occupies a thunderous crown-like ruling position in the temple of the legal empire. It is a solid foundation for all actions, a basic, authoritative and quasi-religious text.

In those days when Americans had the most lack of confidence in the government, the story shows how people can accomplish greater things under democratic institutions. At this important moment in history, in the debate about the amendment to the Constitution. Secretary of State William Henry Seward, Republican founder Francis Preston Blair, Rep. Thaddeus Stevens, and General Grant, among others, are political brokers who specialize in underground trading.

In this play, Daniel Day-Lewis’s acting skills are almost against the sky, and the multiple images of Lincoln are skillfully blended. He was born in a poor family. That is why his first girlfriend is forbidden, a clear depiction of social class in the film. The first lady is aristocratic, but she is famous for her bitterness and ugliness. She has no permanent occupation for a long time.

There are several wonderful clips in the whole play. Lincoln started telling stories in a panic and despair. The humorous, ridiculous and ridiculous made everyone laugh, and soon turned the scene around. Perhaps due to Lincoln’s early self-study period and familiarity with Shakespeare’s books, this also illustrates from another angle, Lincoln’s personality charm as a leader. I think everyone will like this kind of leadership.
