The podcast I listened to was on a healthcare system in Narayana Health, located in India. This is a chain of hospitals that provide specialized care and provides ultra-modern medical services at a much smaller cost compared to the cost Americans pay for healthcare service. As such, more surgeries are performed in India more than the US and Europe. Dr. Shetty Devi is a cardiologist who was trained in the UK as a cardiac surgeon and founded the Narayan Health Enterprise when he returned home in the early 2000s. Dr. Shetty found out that millions of Indian Citizens had heart problems, and despite this, they could not afford a heart operation. He acknowledges that he realized that without taking care of the heart capacity of the Indians, he would lack practice. According to Dr. Shetty, this problem was experienced mainly in India, with a majority of the percentage being children. Statistically, of the 28 million Indian children born per year, approximately 1 in 140 children suffer from cardiac problems. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Dr. Shetty has successfully built over 31 hospital chains in 19 different locations over the last 15 years that offer various kinds of treatments. He says that these hospitals perform approximately 150 surgeries a day and serve about 80,000 outpatients. He further adds that the healthcare system lays emphasis on efficiency as a driver of quality health care, and he finds this as a noble purpose that makes this unaffordable services accessible.
