Short Story and Poetry Questions

Question one:

Poetry is a type of writing that involves the use of art and is meant to provoke the reader’s emotions and imagination. Attachment one is a poem based on my definition because the text “a leaf falls in loneliness” makes one try to imagine what its true meaning is.

Furthermore, it triggers an emotion of loneliness. According to my experience of reading poetic works, I have learned that poets create texts that have hidden meanings in it. This way, the reader will try to find the meaning of the passages through imagination and the involvement of emotions. For instance, the literal meaning of the text in attachment one can be: once a person who has been on top (higher status) in the society falls, there is a chance that the people will start avoiding him and eventually become lonely.

Question two:

Attachment two is a poem because the author in writing the text wanted to stir the reader’s imagination and emotions. A poem is a piece of art that involves writings that are meant to trigger the reader’s thinking and to make him/her understand the true meaning of the poet’s words. I have read a lot of poems, and one of my favorite poets is the renowned writer William Shakespeare. His works were full of poetic terms, and while reading them, I am sure even you will start to imagine what he meant in his writings. Poets’ goal is to arouse the reader’s thoughts and emotions. While reading attachment two, I realized that the author was not talking about the bird stack in the granary but rather the readers who read poems that stir their emotions, and eventually, they get trapped in them. The third paragraph of attachment two explains the main point of the author; he says, “Readers who love poems of light may sit hunched in the corner with nothing in their gizzards for four days, light failing, the eyes glazed.”

Question three:

After reading the criteria of a short play in attachment three, I am now convinced that the content in attachment four is a play. From attachment three, the first criterion for determining a play is ensuring that there is no exposition. This means that the actors jump to the story without explaining it to the audience. From attachment four, we find that the play starts with the staff talking to the traveler. This way, the audiences have not been told what the traveler wants and what happened before. This way, the audience will try to unravel the puzzle by playing with the actors.

The other way to determine that attachment four is a play is through the use of imagery. At the beginning of the play in attachment four, the author says, “guru is crossed-legged on cushions stage left.” The statement triggers the reader’s imagination, and he or she will start to imagine the guru sitting crossed-legged on the left side of the stage. From the fifth criteria of determining a play in attachment three, it says that images speak louder than words. The audience in seeing the guru sited on the left of the stage crossed-legged; their first judgment is that the guru is an important person in the play, and the staff and the traveler have something to do with him.

Another explanation that shows attachment four is a play is through the adherence of the third criteria of attachment three. It says that the character should have dreams, and he should speak to get what he wants. From attachment four, we can see that the traveler speaks of what he wanted when the guru asked him why he had visited. He says, “I am searching. I want to discover the path that is right for me”. This explains the dreams of the traveler, and the audience on reading this section will understand that the traveler’s dream is to find the right path in his life.
