Farm Management

The problem of the study is climate change and its impacts on agricultural management in Southern California.  Climate change leads to severe dry spells and higher temperatures that are not favorable for crop production. The agriculture systems used are irrigation and rain-fed agriculture. Irrigation of farms has led to increased yields.

Climate change is a threat to agriculture production and management because of the increased frequency and intensity of climate extremes, reduced water availability, high temperatures, risk of pests and diseases, and increased duration of dry spells. Permanent crops are the most productive grown crops, which are grown for more than 25years, and this makes them more vulnerable to climate change. Climate change affects the population and economy of Sothern California because it depends on agriculture to generate revenue income. It poses a severe threat to the California agricultural industry, which is responsible for more than half of all domestic vegetables and fruits. Irrigated agriculture in California produces 90% of harvested crops and feeds the entire US, and other countries and decline could lead to high food insecurity, and increased prices.

The farmers have the right to enjoy a favorable climate to improve their crop production. They should ensure sustainable agricultural practice, such as use mechanized agriculture. To achieve a pleasant environment, the farmers should incorporate sustainable greenhouse grower’s methods to reduce the impacts of adverse climate change. They should increase soil organic content in an acre of farmland by just 2% will save up to 28,000 gallons of water.

According to empirical results of agriculture production in California, adoption of Sustainable agricultural practices and efficient agriculture management leads to increased crop production hence fewer impacts of climate change to agriculture.  Sustainable agriculture practices include carbon sequestration and emissions reductions.

The agricultural management plan that I will adopt is carbon sequestration, keeping agriculture clean, organic soil practices, efficient agriculture and livestock management, and emissions reduction through useful manure, feed management, and suitable fertilizer application. The carbon iv dioxide is harvested and stored in soils to avoid release CO2 back to the atmosphere that leads to climate change.

The growers should improve the environment around them to reduce risks associated with climate change. The support of system land management provides multiple ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration. It will improve the production of crops affected by climate change and lead to high revenue income in California.
