Taking writing class
Taking this writing class for my semester requirements has been a process that can only be termed as adventurous. In my very first attendance, I had the assumption that writing was to be just as normal as in completing any other assignment in other classes. Little didn’t I know that I would not only have to be creative but as well as dig deeper into aspects of my life to evoke emotions and explore to show that in my assignment. In this paper, I shall, therefore, highlight a few from the many skills I have learned and how I desire or foresee myself applying them in my chosen career path of being a nurse.
Apart from submitting assignments, I think the most consistent thing that has happened to me in this class would be the rate they got returned for correction. A first, it used to be quite an involving and, to some degree, a very tiring and disliked exercise. With enough time, however, I came to appreciate the level of effort I started placing in my work. It was getting easier to describe detail vividly in my remembrance essays and evoking emotion in my response essays.
The art of editing and re-editing is an essential skill as it instills the value of proofreading. This skill is especially important in the medical field, where most decisions made could lead to life and death scenarios. For a nurse who is in charge of administering prescriptions, exposing a patient to the wrong drug is a fatal incident. A nurse must check the labels in a prescribed medication, the timing, and the details of a patient’s condition to avoid any confusion. The idea of re-editing and rechecking my work will be a constant reminder that ensures the quality and accurate delivery of my services.
I have come to learnt that writing is a very sensitive tool. The skill of being sensitive to how I communicate and how it is influenced by circumstances is crucial to learn and master for a nurse. During my remembering essays, I had to take great care in my nostalgic reflections not to veer off from the requirement of my assignment. As a nurse, the circumstances of my life might be a basis for how I attend to my patients. It is hence important to ensure that I am sensitive to how my communication is shaped by background and even the target audience.
Personal strength and self-motivation also proved to me essential in my writing class and I strongly feel they could come in handy in my workplace. The work I had to submit for grading required that I become as creative as I could and be motivated enough to follow through with the writing. It could be a norm to do the bare minimum but the end result would be substandard submissions. The personal strength to always work towards improvement can reflect in my nursing career. As a caregiver, there is required enough motivation to deal with my patients who have different personalities and varying backgrounds to ensure quality.
Looking back, the thought process I had at the beginning of this class has been edited positively. I can now see exactly how the learning process has cultivated in me skills I can harness in places outside of the classroom. In my future career as a nurse, I will recall the aforementioned skills as well as others such as punctuality to deadlines, team-work and organized work. Combined, all the skills will improve my creativity in communication and relations with workmates. They propagate thinking independently and productively.
