Essay on Hayek

Hayek was well known as a result of his contribution to the discipline of political and economic philosophy. His fame is associated with his ultimate defense for free-market capitalism; therefore, he was the greatest critic of the socialism regimes (Friedman, 1997). He supported the economic system that is founded on private property ownership for the purpose of profit generation, rather than state ownership. As a result, he asserted that he most free and efficient form of governance and law is a system that promotes capitalist competition. This paper will explain Hayek’s reasons for the arguments and make a conclusion on its appropriateness.

The government is tasked with numerous roles to its citizens. Among them is peacekeeping, property protection, and contract enforcement, things which the free society government should strive to do; otherwise, there is no guarantee of the absolute personal freedom in the community. The current society provides every person with equal rights to thrive; therefore, the freedom and right to own property, accumulate wealth, and engage in a competitive market is upheld. Hayek’s assertion may be a way to encourage competition among the people as they strive to improve their living standards; therefore, the best the government should do is create an enabling environment through promoting capitalistic competition.

Hayek makes the argument since the government has the role of protecting its citizens alongside their properties. The assertions made by Hayek are therefore correct since the government would only be termed as successful if it is efficient in upholding the rule of law and governance. This will only be achieved if the polices and rules made promote competition, an aspect that is upheld by capitalism.
