Boys and men benefit from Tough guise
Boys and men benefit from Tough guise by empowering them to challenge myths and beliefs that mean that have to engage in violence and behaviours, which are self-destructive.
According to Katz, violence against women means that women have their issues and the violence has to happen just like the weather and pay attention to helping the survivors and victims’ while men’s violence against women is a men issue contributing to 98% of the violence to women. The gap between these two terms is wide because instead of seeing it as men’s issues and addressing it, we look at it as a women issue.
The media would emphasize the fact that these are girls in case of a shooting in a school and girls were perpetrators because media fail to bring gender equality in matters of girls and boys. It was a case of boys the matter wouldn’t be emphasized because boys are viewed as violent and discriminated in this community.
Media and cultures inspire actual violence to boys compared to girls and women who live in the same environment because are viewed as masculine and to be a real man you have to be violent and destructive according to media videos and culture. The violence of men is treated as investable and expects it to happen. These expectations make men appear unable to make an ethical decision.
If men had to go beyond the Tough Guise, a real man characteristic, according to culture and media, would show themselves. These traits would be; men who don’t show emotions, they never back down, they don’t overthink and must manifest in everything they do toughness. Finally, a real man should dominate power; men are supposed to be sexually aggressive with women, physically powerful and aggression control.
