Community-based projects
Community-based projects have been significant in societies because they cover different areas to address issues affecting community members. The welfare of community members has been addressed mostly. Community-based healthcare projects have been successful as most people, such as the elderly, are unable to cater to their medical expenses; thus, the support from well-wishers. I work with a community-based organization based in Florida, where we provide for the needs of the elderly by housing them in a Seventh Day Church. The church has everything available in any other home ranging from healthcare facilities to food reserves to fully furnished gym for them to keep fit and many others.
The elderly members in society have a challenge of diet and obesity mainly due to poor nutrition and little or no movements. I have consulted with the head of the department in the health department at the church to conduct research within the community and later present the findings at the church hall. I have also contacted two other officials to partner with me, one being a local leader and the other one, a senior nutritionist. Community-based projects are successful when there is a collaboration with key partners. The reason for selecting this community is due to many cases of obesity among the elderly. According to Healthy People 2020, obesity is among the leading causes of deaths and other related diseases such as asthma, blood pressure, and heart diseases. I am planning to collect data from about 50 older adults whom I will recommend best lifestyle practices such as diet management and exercises, among others. I will print posters and banners and liaise with local leaders to help create awareness and data collection and later present the findings at the church hall using PowerPoint presentations and handouts.
