Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle in Spotlight Movie

PDCA, which is also known as the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, is a recurring process that takes place in our day to day activities. The movie Spotlight, released in 2015, replicates the real story about the Boston Globe. The Boston Globe is a newspaper publication that publishes daily news. Therefore, the Plan step entails identifying the issue and understanding the cause of the problem. In Spotlight movie, the Plan step is illustrated when Marty Baron, the editor of Boston Globe, allocates a journalist team to investigate accusations against John Geoghan, a defrocked priest alleged of abusing over 80 boys (Atiyas &Thoyibi, 2018). The reporters promised to provide proof against the priest of a cover-up sexual mistreatment within the Roman Catholic Church.

The Do step involves measuring the results and implementing the solutions. The stage is illustrated Soon after the Boston Globe’s new editor Marty Baron arrives at the Globe and assigns Spotlight to follow up in-depth on an earlier report about Mitchell Garabedian. Garabedian is said to have proof that Cardinal Bernard Law, Boston’s Archbishop, knew about the child molestations and covered them up. Spotlight reporter Michael Rezendes reaches out to Garabedian, who then puts him in contact with some of the victims (Goldstein, 2015).

Check step involves investigating if the solutions lead to a satisfactory outcome for the company. In the Spotlight, the Check stage is shown by the team, ensuring interviews and accusations are supported by the court documents or lawyers who were representing the victims. Since many of the team members were Catholic, they had to take their own biases out of the game.

The Act step comprises the recording of results, redesigning the organization, and allowing the top management to take action (Atiyas &Thoyibi, 2018). In the Spotlight movie, the step is illustrated after the Spotlight team publishes the story of the priest allegation, which led to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to accept the Charter to ensure that the children and teenagers are protected against any mistreatment.

The purpose of management reports is to make the managers aware of factors they should consider when making a better decision for the organization. Therefore, if I were supposed to publish the article in the form of a management report, I would gather the opinions of the victims about the findings found from the priest allegations before making final decisions for the church. This will ensure that all the needs of the people are well addressed. I would also ensure that the audience understands the context, content, and meaning of my management report by representing it with data. The data will illustrate the number of children who were sexually abused, interviewed, and their reaction towards the abuse.
