MODERN FAITH

In the search for the modernity of faith, it is dated back to twenties, which goes within and beyond the traditional religion. It has two con-current drives, which need to affirm human salvation, hope, and goodness after the apocalyptic world war, and in the struggle in accommodating the modernity with revered systems and traditional systems[1]. The growing religious beliefs and religious revival in America have led to plugging of our heads into the see out of spiritual and religious curiosity. Religious books fill the special tables in the country bookstores, and the lectures are frequently attended, and some centers like Sir Oliver Lodge sometimes are physically exhausted.

Americans today are groping towards the invisible spiritual things in their way. They want to find something solid that anchors our faith, immaterial, and holy things. Great leaders of the churches say that they desire that they know why the masses appear as sheep but without the shepherd. The things that were authoritative in the past are today being submitted in searching of challenge and criticism. The religious revolution has shaken the social fabric and industrial to its foundation. The discouraging element about religion is that the church cannot solve the problems of this new era. Wayfarer says that he is guided by service and faith by understanding and interprets Christ’s presence at all times, adversity, and triumphant over doubts.

There is a worldwide desire to find someone who can touch the hearts of the mass, their imagination and bring them back to the salvation of the old faith. They achieve this by talking to them. America’s professional evangelists tried to do it sincerely, but they did not endure and were not very significant. They did stage performance and created temporary situations, which would expose the crowd’s characteristic is a fixed system of ideas, egoism, and hostility. Crowd movement created an artificial picture that was decreased as soon as they left. The scientific picture of journalism and education were crude and came from popular opinions and knowledge.

The emergence of theory, as seen by the story of the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr who was an American protestant, started from 1922.[2] In 1922, he received a pitiful letter from a young pastor who thinks by being liberal, and he wants to leave the church; he thinks that the churches will crucify him because of leading the congregation into the modern world of life and thought. He has been in conservative communion but does not have any idea about theology.  He went to St. Louis, where he found two nuns who were reading their prayer books and felt superior that the nuns. Their faces were human and kindly, but he compared their gowns that were white and their black skins as ghosts. He compared the difference between him and the nuns and concluded that all these were because of the religious modernity and the type of quality that has brought. Those ministers who refuse to have fashionable women smoking were seen to enforce a code that had become the habit of the person. The church prevents women from smoking to prevent Christian standards. The church by keeping life from generating inhumanity, they are seen to be like the Red Cross in service at war. The religion that can contribute to the solutions for the industrial problems must be set. Some of the modern educators do not even have the idea of religion, and they need rational faith

There was a speedy acceleration in the city’s life that showed a lack of dominance in religious beliefs.[3] The industrial culture was more strongly adopted, and their religious teacher, the people in the middle town, were told they were sinners, and they needed salvation. Their state was not perfected, and they need to present a vigorous course that would see progress in the city. There were increasing divorce, secular marriages were reported, and the businesses men were stressing loyalty less than were trained to teach their children. In general, the Middletown was dominated by religious activities, and life seems not to be controlled by religious norms.

Fundamentalists believed that the bible is the word of God. They reject any form of sentence that does not suit them like those that are unprofitable, uninspired, and even undesirable. They make the bible the final authority and supreme in life and faith. They believe that the world is illumined, and the church is instructed by which science is confirmed when it’s true, and the false part is condemned.

Americans who believed in the religion and those who were against it started embracing the many discoveries that were growing, the modernists. Insufficient sense of comfort, support from the religion and churches, and sustenance led to surge if infidelity in the roaring twenties.[4] Modernists wanted religious intervention in modern affairs, and they desired them to embrace serenity, morality, and collectively. The modernists wanted to step out and explore the many faiths that could bring the same spirit and comfort that Christians had.
