In the “Forbidden: Undocumented and Queer in Rural America” documentary, the show starts with President Trump talking about Mexican immigrants and then we are introduced to the main character Moises Serrano, an undocumented immigrant. Moises emigrated from Mexico with his parents when he was eighteen months old, which means he is not a legal immigrant because he was not born in the United States. Not only is he an undocumented immigrant, we later learn that he is gay and lives in North Carolina, a fact that presents him with even more challenges. The primary purpose of this documentary is to shine a light on the many difficulties that undocumented immigrants face while trying to enjoy the rights they hoped for while living in America. This documentary used the story of Moises to humanize the numerous challenges that immigrants face on a daily basis which are unfortunately exacerbated by the federal government. This social-cultural topic has recently been the basis of multiple debates highlighting the importance of immigrants and why they should be protected instead of being isolated. This documentary highlights these issues while also showing immigrants how they can overcome them while still embracing their social identity. This documentary uses the point of view that oppression and discrimination emanate from external forces rather than the numerous documents which show self-inflicted sentiments. The main character’s ability to embrace his identity pushed him to become an influential voice representing both communities. Undocumented immigrants left their countries because they were hoping for better opportunities. Unfortunately, most f the time this is not true because they end up being oppressed by the communities around them as well as the government. Undocumented immigrants should be protected and empowered because they bring with them diversity in their culture that enriches the nation. Moreover, immigrants are a significant contribution to any economy in terms of a skilled workforce and an available market.
